I’m thinking of adding to my tattoo collection that I had previously before my HA. My question is, I’m on a blood thinner of 75mg of aspirin daily, Will I be able to go ahead? The tattooist is very reputable one known him for years, so all good there. Anyone had experience of large tattoos while on heart meds?
TIA,
JD. 😃

OK had a chat with him, not really a clear cut answer unfortunately. Basically it seems that it is a matter of going ahead and seeing how things go particularly with larger jobs. Some people bleed more than others anyway but if it becomes a problem then obviously they would have to stop. You may either at this point or before consult your GP, or elect to stop taking them yourself. This may sound a bit dramatic but I recently had a consultation for a cataract operation and the guy just told me that I would need to stop taking the blood thinners for 2 days before the operation, no recommendation to refer back to cardiologist/GP. I presume this is standard procedure, personally I am happy to take whatever risk there might be to restore decent sight but you would have to make the call I guess? At he end of the day it would be bloody bad luck if you had a clotting problem that just happened to occur at the same time? Maybe go for a smaller one as a test?
Thank you that’s great. 😃 I was thinking along the same lines and was going to have something small to start with.
I recently had some dentistry work done without any problems, I explained I was on a blood thinner of aspirin, and he didn’t seem at all concerned, but said it would have been more of a problem if I was taking warfarin. So hopefully things will go smoothly with the tattoo.
Thank you again for the help and information, much appreciated. 🙏🏻
You can’t possibly let a little asprin put you off having a new tatt. You must ofcouse tell the artist, some people bleed more than others anyway.I read an interesting thing about tattoos and immune system, apparently if you have more than one tattoo it can boost your immune system after each tatt but if it’s your first it might lower your immune system temporarily ( not a recognised medical fact tho)
Haha, to be honest I’m a little worried about it, as I haven’t had any tattoos since before my HA in 2016. But I know the tattooist won’t take any chances, and I’m going to start off with something small first off to see how things go. Hopefully everything will be fine, wish me luck. 😆
Having a tattoo boosts mood, which is exactly what we need for our health … I bled massively on mine few years ago and was on NO meds at the time Good Luck
I was considering a new tattoo. Maybe turning my nine inch scar into a zip. (Handy if I ever need to be opened up again.) I'm on Warfarin. I was told at a recent trip to the dentist that they had no problems with working unless my INR was above 3.0. I would imagine the same guideline applies. Can't imagine aspirin would be a problem.
Nice idea - I’d love a tattoo but I gather it’s not advised after aortic valve replacement in case of valve infection. However on the aspirin front - I take same dose as you every day and last year I had to have a lumbar puncture and my cardiologist advised me to stay off my aspirin for 10 days before the procedure. Good luck with your artwork and post photos once it’s done 😃. Sue 🙏
Hi Jackdaw. A tattooist I know said because of my heart condition I need to get a letter from a doctor saying it's ok to have one. Catch 22 as no doctor is going to give you a letter. (The chap who did my first tat 9 years ago has retired, otherwise I'd have gone to him!)
Hi Alison,I’m just going to see how it goes, if my tattooist refuses to do it then that’s it, I wouldn’t go anywhere else.
This is the problem I’m having, no one can give me a 100% definite answer if it’s ok or not, the only reason I can see for not having some more work done is because of possibly more bleeding from the tattoo. My plan is to just take it slow, and keep the time in the chair short. Hopefully everything will work out. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
My gp nearly killed me I went to her with chest pains neck and jaw pain pain thay radiated down my arms she didn't check my blood pressure my pulse or even listen to my heart felt my thyroid and said inhad anxiety while I was having a heart attack luckily I got home and rang an ambulance I have a stent fitted the next day , I don't trust doctors at all that have basic medical training which is what gps have these days .
Hi....have been thinking the same....would love to have another tattoo (a small one) and have been wondering the same. Good to see the answers. Still a bit undecided but feel I want to go for it.
Maybe have a word with your tattooist and see what they say. My guy has tattooed people who have had HA and who are on blood thinners before, never been any problems.
But if you are at all unsure you should always seek advice from the doctor. 👍🏻
Had the first session yesterday 2 hours, just an outline but it is going to be a whole arm so quite a lot of work. No problems at all, and according to my tattooist mate no more blood than anyone else, just the normal. 👍🏻
I’ve had no bad reactions to any of my tattoos. Normal amount of bleeding according to the tattooist, and the only time I’ve had bruises was when the tattoo was on the soft skin on the inside of my elbow, where the elbow bends, which is again normal.
If you are in any doubt, please have a chat with your doctor.
