I'm 35yr old and have been told I have mitral valve prolapse with servere regurgitation. I've had an echo, ekg, Toe scan, angiogram and more. After 2 weeks in hospital with chest pain I've been told I need to have open heart surgery to repair/replace the valve. No date set as I have to loose some weight for safety in surgery but I feel the symptons are worse than before. I'm constantly tired, chest pains 2 or 3 times a day, short of breath at the slightest thing. I've lost my job because of it. But have had no contact from consultants since being discharged months ago. I'm at a loss and bricking it. To top it off the side effects of the tablets I'm on are ridiculous (ramipril, bisropol, furesomede)

Your tablets are what many of us are on. Side effects can often be better controlled by the time of day you take them ie furosemide on a morning or you would be up all night peeing. Bisopralol is well known for causing a persistent annoying cough. For me, when taken first thing, it dropped my BP so low I spent all day sleeping in a chair. If the side effects don't improve or are really debilitating, talk to your GP who could either suggest different times or change them. There are alternatives. If you need help losing weight, your GP can also point you in the right direct ion. Since you've heard nothing for ages, phone the consultant's secretary and explain how much worse you feel and ask to speak to him or ask for a cancellation appointment. Covid has certainly slowed down appointments but if you are getting worse you need to tell them. Be proactive; don't just wait for them.
I'm 34 I have had my mitral valve leaking for nearly 16 years now. It is a pain in the butt.
I am only on bisoprolol but the leaky valve symptoms are annoying on a daily basis! I get breathless sitting, standing or laying but I feel better when im walking. I have a lot of extra beats and sometimes I just get one big wallop like someones smashing a drum and it can go on for hours or days. I'm still working but by 3pm I really need to sleep, I haven't been seen by my cardiologist for some years - I paid privately for my echo (because they couldn't fit me in) and I am waiting for a phone call on Friday. Depending how long you've been on tablets depends on side effects too mine last a couple of weeks when my dose went up my blood pressure was up and down had pounding head aches etc.
If you feel like they aren't doing enough just keep chasing everyone up that you can. They did warn me years ago they wouldn't operate until last minute which wasn't very reassuring and it has changed all them years in my life but i'm still here.
Hi, I feel for you. I had my open heart surgery 3 months ago for prolapsed mitral valve. Like you, breathless and told I needed the repair asap. I hated the bisoprolol's side effects. It was worth having the operation although it is a long recovery but I am no longer breathless. I agree, chase up the consultant and make sure you have not got lost and forgotten! If you have a supportive GP would they help you to chase it? Someone should be keeping an eye on you.
