Mitral Valve Prolapse with moderate regurgitation

Hi everyone, having been recently diagnosed with MVP and moderate regurgitation. I found out the level of regurgitation in December following a cardiac MRI. I had a 6 month follow up echo scan in June. Hadn’t heard anything back so decided to call my GP and the receptionist just told me there were no results just that I was under review and was due back for a scan in October. Just wondering if anyone has a had any similar experience? Thanks so much!

I've had a moderately leaky mitral valve for about 11 years. I'm supposed to get an echo every year, although that schedule often slips. An echocardiogram isn't an exact science - I did have one that that was nearer to severe, but ever since they been fine. I normally have to wait 6-8 weeks for the results. The only issue for me is that I've needed 3 surgeries in that time and the anaesthetist always wanted some input from a cardiologist, to make sure I'm fit for surgery.

I hope that reassures you somewhat.

Thanks so much for your reply, it definitely helps. Sorry to hear you had 3 surgeries, hope all okay. I was just worrying a bit as the next follow up scan is in 4 months, and the last one I had was 6 months. I was thinking maybe the leak has got worse but they haven’t said anything and the next follow up scan is in October. Thanks for your reply 😊

I have moderate mitral regurgitation. They don't seem to worry about it until it's severe. In my case anyway.

Thanks for the reply. How often do you have follow up echo scans?

Usually once a year, but sometimes more if I've been hospitalised for other heart issues.

Same here. My cardiologist said I might have moderate regurgitation for the rest of my life and never need intervention for it if it remains stable. I just have to have a scan every year to make sure there’s no deterioration.

Hi, It seems a bit odd that you would have another Echo only four months after the last. From my experience they only do this if they suspect a problem, however, that doesn't appear to be the case.

You didn't by some chance have an Echo in October last year, prior to the MRI?

Yeah that’s what I thought but if something has changed surely they should tell me?

I did have an echo last October, then was referred for the cardiac MRI in December.

Hi, I had a feeling you might have had an Echo. I suspect the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.

There's a good chance that as the GP doesn't have results from your June Echo, they haven't updated your records accordingly, and are still showing at a 12 month referral from October last year. To be honest, its rare that I get the GP involved with an Echo, and always deal directly with the hospital re-appointments. I'd try the hospital for the results and an indication when your next appt will be.

Take care.
