Hi, I have recently registered with a new dentist & they have asked me to consult with my cardiologist regarding antibiotic prophylaxis before any invasive treatment (Hygienist, extraction etc), as I have stated I have mitral valve prolapse (as well as dilated cardiomyopathy & Atrial fibrillation, as a result of Myocarditis a year ago).
I have left a message with my cardiologist but still waiting a reply.
Can anyone else advise ?
Many thanks

I also have mitral valve prolapse for which I was hospitalised about 18 months ago due to severe regurgitation. My cardiologist has said that I must have antibiotics for any invasive dental work. Hope that helps,
Hi Isalandhopper 77 I too have Mitral Valve Prolapse and was just told the same thing this week. My dentist wrote to my cardiologist and the response was that I must have antibiotic cover every time I visit the dentist.
I have prosthetic aortic valve and cardiologist wrote helpful letter to dentist to advise prophhylactic antibiotic prior to invasive dental treatment (including visit to hygeinist). The NICE guidelines indicate that this is not necessary except for certain high risk groups. Cardiologist thinks that prosthetic valve puts you in high risk group. Dentist concurs.
I am sent a sachet of 5mg Amoxycillin which I take one hour prior to visit. It took a while for the dental surgery to trust me to take the antibiotic without supervision- but I seem to have earned my spurs and they now send to my home!!
Having seen my father experience endocarditis and the consequences, its worth it.
Many thanks for the responses. Having already had Myocarditis, I definitely don’t want to get Endocarditis as well. It seems like it would be prudent to have antibiotic prophylaxis before any major (invasive) treatment.
Hi, it was picked up on an echocardiogram (ultrasound) back in February. When I found out, I was quite worried, as I previously thought my heart valves were ok (based on an MRI I had last December).
More recently, I’ve become more anxious, as my cardiologist has referred me to a heart valve clinic for further follow up. Apparently I have moderate regurgitation (which wasn’t mentioned previously, only that I have mitral valve prolapse) but not really having any symptoms.
My main concern at the moment is risk of endocarditis, regarding dental work.
Waiting for results is frustrating-I didn’t get mine until a follow up appointment 3months after the echocardiogram. It’s worth chasing them up, as things can get stuck in the system.
It’s all a bit worrying with covid about isn’t it. I haven’t seen a cardiologist yet my gp referred me for tests. Over 4 years ago l was diagnosed with regurgitation leaky valve so I’m thinking now it has become prolapsed as regurgitation has become much worse and at times painful. Thank you for your imput
