Bisoprolol Weight Gain,Dosage., nutrition and exercise.

Hi again. Regarding Bisoprolol, I’m on 10mg a day. Since being put in it 14 months ago my body has gained 2 stone in weight!

Before anybody says see a nutritionist or exercise I can assure you that’s all done.

No, I don’t cheat with cakes and lie about what I’ve eaten. No I don’t drink calorific drinks.

I’m 5’8” tall and for eleven years was a consistent 10stone 5.

Until Bisoprolol.

Now I’m 12st 10

Eating hasn’t changed besides reducing intake and exercising more to try to stop this.

My eating and exercise was closely monitored this last month.

I am pescatarian and don’t eat meat, only fish.

I eat healthy and regularly:

I exercise and stay active.

Eating less and exercising more reduced my weight over the course of a month by ONE POUND and so I had a day of eating an extra banana and an apple and it went back on!

This medication is like the devils pills.

I have just received a letter telling me I am now pre diabetic:

My father was type one diabetic and a very tall thin man, never overweight.

I am a size 16 now and used to be a size 10/12.

I have no nice clothes to wear and feel severely depressed.

The weight gain has triggered fibromyalgia and I have spinal cord compressions that are making me struggle to walk now with the added pressure from weight gain.

My knees are in terrible pain and I’m having to strap them up each day now.

Does anybody else agree with me that 10mg of Bisoprolol are damaging to some people?

It is interfering with something that inhibits weight loss and increases gain by sedating the metabolic system.

My hair has also thinned terribly.

My skin is dry.

I’ve been begging to come off of these for 8 months and the heart doctors do not listen.

What good is a pill that helps one thing but causes so many other damaging and life limiting conditions as well as making me feel I don’t want to be here anymore?

The depressions from the weight gain is horrendous, insomnia, tearful, I withdrew from society months ago and can’t even face family now let alone friends.

This is miserable and again, please no comments or suggestions about diets and nutrition, it makes no difference.

Just for the record a typical consistent day;

Breakfast low fat yogurt, 5 grapes and a teaspoon of seeds with 5 blueberries.

Lunch; protein drink with an apple.

Dinner; salmon with salad followed by low fat yogurt and 5 grapes.

Drinks; 2 litres of water and green tea.

Exercise; 5000 steps minimum.

Thankyou and well wishes for you all X

Surely there must be something else going on. Is this the only medication you are taking . I am also on Bisopropolol but not that high a dose and have had no issues with weight gain. I would understand if you were on Prednisone but this is very unusual

Hi. Yes, ramipril 10mg and furusemide 80mg. It’s a miserable situation 😢I’m pre-diabetic now as a result of this extra weight. Never eat anything unhealthy, never excessive, very healthy lifestyle. It’s even been monitered and is definitely the Bisoprolol as this all began when I started taking it. It clearly doesn’t agree with my metabolism X

That's a hefty dose of Bisoprolol you're taking there, but of course we don't know what's happening with your heart and your doctor does.

Be aware I have no medical training whatsoever, but I can tell you right now that if I were you I would want that dose reduced if it had the same effect on me as it does you. Darned doctors write you a prescription then want you to disappear forever, no matter how badly they affect. I really feel for you and you are certainly justified to feel as you do. Could you see a different doctor? There are a lot of similar meds you could try, for instance I take Metoprolol and there are lots of good reports on Nebivol. Could you talk to your GP?

Honest I feel so cross at the way you've been treated I could swear!!!

Hi Jean.Your reply has just made me cry (in a good way!) Thankyou! I am so grateful that you took the time to tune into what’s happening here and connect up, what you’ve said is the first time I’ve felt understood and heard. Your suggestions of the alternative meds are great and I’ll look into it. You are SO right on the fact that they dish out a prescription and can’t be bothered with you afterwards.... sadly my heart failure nurse team are on that ‘can’t be bothered’ list, almost as if they take the attitude ‘she’s still alive so she should be grateful! They promised a review back in early December and despite my trying to contact them they haven’t even returned my calls.

Yes, I agree with everything that you’ve said and I will keep on until they do something about this.

Thankyou Thankyou THANKYOU Jean. I feel lifted by you and your lovely energy. Sending you well wishes for your health as well and hoping that you are managing a consistently good balance X🙏❤️X

Is Bisoprolol the only med you are taking?

Hello

10 mg of Bisoprolol is around the maximum dose prescribed as far as I know !! I vary between 7.5 and 10mg depending on what my heart rhythm is doing if HR is below 30 it gets reduced from 10 down to 7.5 and then monitored for a couple of months and changed again. I am lucky I have no problems with going up and down on Bisoprolol.

I think a lot depends on Metabolism not knowing how your Heart Failure is Severe/ Moderate/ Mild it's difficult to comment on what's going on .

I would be concerned with your comment on your Heart Failure Team, mine are pretty good and the correspondence with my GP is first class. There are so many interactions with what's going on with your Heart it's difficult to put it all down to one thing i.e. Bisoprolol you are not on 10mg for fun a Cardiologist thought that is what's best for you.

Easy to say I know but forget the weight and concentrate on being well that's the important thing in all of this. Honestly

I feel your suffering, I really do. I have days when I too experience exactly the same as you describe and the emotions can be just so overwhelming and scary. If you dont feel that you are getting the professional medical support that you need, have you considered contacting PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) at the hospital you attend. All NHS hospitals have them and I've heard good feedback. If you wish to PM me, that's cool.

Take care. 🌻🙏🌻

Was also just thinking, since you now have a letter stating you are pre-diabetes, it would be beneficial (if not already arranged along with your letter) to see an Endocrinologist, who deals with both Diabetes and Metabolic issues and disorders. 🌻🌻
