Hi I have just been told, out of the blue, that I am in for a pacemaker on 28 th May. Am terrified, not really sure what has prompted this. Need to comprise a list of questions to ask consultant when/if he/she rings me. All ideas gratefully accepted.
Also any tips for afterwards would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.
I found the placing of the pacemaker traumatic, so if I have to have mine removed for change of battery, I will insist on sedation. The procedure is done under a local anaesthetic, but hospitals/surgeons vary with offering sedation as well. Now that I have my pacemaker it is trouble free.......and saving my life!
Do you have a slow heartrate and/or pauses ? If so that will be why you are getting a pacemaker.Nothing to be terrified about, the procedure is done with a local anaesthetic and usually doesn't take very long, I was in and out within 30 mins but for some people it can take a bit longer. It shouldn't be a painful procedure but can be uncomfortable with lots of pushing and pulling, you will feel a bit bruised and battered for a few weeks after. An X-ray will be taken after to check the wires are in the right place and you will be seen in the pacing clinic to check settings, sometimes they need tweaking.
No raising of that arm above shoulder height for 6 weeks and no lifting or stretching, wear comfortable clothes that are easy to get on and off.
I found the bruising afterwards the worst part, it was extensive and painful for around 6-8 weeks but it was worth it as the relief of knowing the pm is there and working to stop any further problems far outweighs any pain at the time.

Good morning Potatohead123. I had to have a pacemaker 18 months ago for the 1st time And I can assure you know one is more scared of hospitals and operations than me. And I know some people have different experiences But in my case I was awake all the way through. They put numbing gel on the top of your shoulder and when I had my pacemaker All i felt was a bit of pressing and pressure and it was all done. And as soon as I got back to the ward. I was up and out of bed walking around. So please try not to worry too much. I know its easier said than done. Take care. Brian
