Please can anyone help me. I have been isolated for a year, am 78 and live alone. Having tests next week but suspected of having PADS. No diabetes. Am very frightened. Does anyone know if there’s treatment for this condition?

I don't know anything to help, but have you looked at the other posts on site? There is a list on my page on the top right, or you can use the search box. The main BHF website also has a lot of useful information.

I know how frightening this sort of diagnosis is, but there are some very good treatments around these days. I hope you get some help soon.

I have PAD which started with pain in my calf muscle after I walked for a bit. There is various treatments depending on where the problem is. If it isn’t too bad exercise can help a lot. Thing is to get thoroughly checked out and find where the problem is. They can do scans.

Hi Winnie. My husband has Pads. The pain in his calf comes after walking. Advised to stop and then walk through the pain. 13 years ago he had a stent fitted behind the knee. He was a heavy smoker which doesn't help the narrowing of the arteries. He has stopped with 3 years as got another blocked artery. He is 71 and in good form . God bless and they will sort it out for you x x

I was diagnosed with PAD 20 years ago . Mine isn’t in my leg it’s in my iliac crest which is near the kidney, but does give me pain in my thigh and buttock . I’m 71 now , it has gradually got worse over the years . I was advised to keep walking till the pain gets to bad to carry on , rest and then continue. I was put on a blood thinner. Surgery or stents are not possible for me because of where the narrowing is . If yours is found to be in the leg there is a possibly if stents. The main thing you have to do is keep walking as much as you can to keep the narrowing open .

Yes, I also was diagnosed with P. A. D., in 2018, and there are two options. But you will have this explained when you see the nurse, for a ultrasound. It really depends on how the circulation is in your legs. Unfortunately for myself, I'm too far gone, and diagnosed with Bilateral illiac artery occlusion, with my weight, and ex smoker, diabetes 2, and too much scaring with previous operations, they are not willing to operate, as I would not survive the op. Obviously this pandemic hasn't helped. Please don't panic, as I'm sure if this PAD is at its early stage with you, my doctors missed mine for 5 years, that's why I'm now in the condition I'm in.

Stay safe, x

Hi Winnie, I am 74 and live alone. I also have PAD. It was 5 years before my diagnosis. I was a smoker, not smoked now for about 9 years. I had a stent in my iliac artery and put on Clopidogrel. Then in 2018 I had another blocked artery in my left thigh, another stent put in. Please don’t worry, I am sure you will get right treatment. Claudication was my main problem to start with. I am in the UK.Good wishes x

I have PAD had it for about ten years now I have trouble walking upstairs and and slopes it hurts like hell. The only thing they told me is keep walking you will build collateral blood supply to bypass the blockage to feed oxygen to muscle. It does work I can walk further than before. I haven't had any surgery yet I'm putting it off for as long as possible. They can stent but they never last that long good luck with any treatment.im in a great FB group the vascular guys in there are amazing even docs to save your limbs never let them amputate xx
