My partner was diagnosed with PAD last year. He unfortunately has quite a widespread problem with narrowing in several places in his lower arteries from his hips down.
Treatment wise, they have been unable to offer anything at this stage but will attempt a stent if his leg becomes critically ischemic.
A lot of the advice focused more on lifestyle - eating well, being careful not to injure legs and feet etc.
Hi, I have PAD and had a Balloon Angioplasty in May of this year (no stent) in both legs. It has much improved the symptoms but I still get some cramping in the back of my legs. Walking is a must if you can. I bought a basic treadmill to help with this in the cold and wet months.
No problem. I too had the cold feet, some numbness (diabetes) and pain in the upper legs.
The PAD was discovered as part of my annual diabetes check. Went to see the specialist, did a echo/Doppler listen to the artery in my ankle and declared I had PAD and needed an angiogram/stent. Most of the year passed and then I got called in for the procedure. They did my left leg first but didn't stent me as they said they wanted to keep that in their back pocket in case I needed it in later life as I was relatively young (60) so just used the balloon method (my left leg was 100% blocked). It was a tad uncomfortable whilst it was taking place but nothing to be too bothered about, but then they found that the blood was taking a rather odd route around my body so they opened up my right leg and did the same procedure. I seems one leg was backfilling the other one!
The whole process took 2 hours and the recovery was 3 hours to make sure the bleeding had stopped.
I may need to have it done again (if they close up again) but to be honest it's no worse than a trip the the dentist that you are not looking forward to.
I think my mobility has increased by at least 90% so if its on offer and you are suitable for it then I can't see any reason not to have it done (but at the end of the day these are your choices).
I had stent and balloon in my left leg,was getting severe cramp in both so figured out it was losartin clashing with aspirin.Ive been fine walking distance regularly but now pain in my right calf is unbearable after 30yds again.I too have just spent £400 on a treadmill that I can’t use,you can’t walk through the pain, anyone else had similar problems??? I’m at the end of my tether with this
Hi, sorry to hear about the pain again. Mine is mostly at rest (in the evenings when sitting down) but I was getting it when walking short distances prior the the balloon. Having read your reply my comment would be to get back in touch with your specialist as unbearable pain in your calf doesn't sound correct to me.
