I have regurgitation l think it means your heart valve doesn’t close properly. I have had it since 2014 and a recent scan showed it hasn’t got any worse

moderate mitral regurgitation around 30% of the blood in the heart is leaking backwards. In severe mitral regurgitation about 50% of blood in the heart is leaking backward. In torrential mitral regurgitation the majority of the blood is going backwards, this happens in conditions such as flail leaflet.

This could have been caused by calcification on the valve or a defect that has only been picked up due to you having some symptoms.I would speak to your cardiologist for a clearer picture on your condition.

I remember reading somewhere that the vast majority of people will have trace to mild regurgitation on 1, 2 or even 3 heart valves seen on an echocardiogram.

Hi there, I’ve recently been diagnosed with this from a standard health check but I can’t see a consultant yet so I have zero information. I’ve made myself ill with stress and worry. How serious is it? Any information you have would really help me as I can’t see a consultant until July.

Hi. This is a quote from the article i had read.

“Nearly all of the normal population will have a finding of some trivial or mild degree of regurgitation of one, two or three heart valves on a normal echocardiogram. This is sometimes called “physiologic” regurgitation by the doctor interpreting the echocardiogram. In most cases, a doctor, used to seeing these types of patients, will not even mention this finding to the patient as a way of avoiding the anxiety associated with this disclosure, which would be an essentially normal finding in most patients.”

Thanks so much for replying, every thing I read sounds quite scary and my family has a history of dying far too young from heart disease so I’m very anxious about it. let’s hope you’re right and I don’t need to worry.
