Hi all,I had my tripe bypass about 3 months ago.I've just felt at the very top of my scar a very small lump, like a pimple is the way to describe it.The things is,I can feel a bit of what I take to be the end of the wire protruding.Has anyone else had this? Will the skin grow over it?Worried about infection.

Good morning beamishNo i didn't get any lumps nor bumps. I was told to ring if i did get a lump or bump.

Or discoloration.

That must be irritating for you,

Before reading your post i took a look at my scar, something i do not usually do. Hard to even find the scar. I am 7months post op.

I am just over three months post bypass surgery as well, and have the same odd pimple-like lump at the top of my scar. The wound nurse at the hospital said that this was a stitch coming through from underneath, and apparently it is quite common for these to come through to the surface, rather than dissolve as they should. She said that when/if it breaks through to the surface to go back and she will take it out. So far it hasn’t “emerged”, and if anything seems to be reducing in size, so I’m hoping it will eventually dissolve by itself.

Thanks Honeybee,I thought it was just wire that held the sternum together, didn't know there were stitches as well.

No problem beamish, I think the wire holds the sternum together and then the layers of tissue on top of that are stitched with soluble stitches. On my scar the outer most layer has then been glued.

I've got what I believe to be some bone regrowth at the top of the sternum which the healing from OHS produced. I can only describe it as hard and knobbly and it's only apparent to the touch and of no concern to me.

It is the same here. The top of my sternum was quite spiky and sore when touched for a year or so, but is now more rounded and painless two and a half years post op. Obviously some bone regrowth has occurred. My chest scar tended to tighten up when I sat still, but this has improved considerably of late. The worst after-effect from the surgery is the nerve damage in my ankle where the vein was removed. I also had an artery removed from my arm, but that is less of a problem.

I have one of these small lumps as well. It is quite stable and doesn't cause any problems. It's been there for 6 years and doesn't bother me or irritate. I had forgotten it was there.
