I really wouldn't advise a tattoo while you're on ticagrelor and aspirin. When I had my heart attack, they noticed a spot on my chest, went back to hospital a week after being discharged to see dermatologist who said it was a basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. So booked to return 7 days later to have it cut out. She had my record of my recent discharge from the hospital and the details of my medication, and mentioned that ideally she'd take me off ticagrelor for 7 days prior to removing the cancer but as I'd only just had my heart attack and a stent fitted it was too soon so would instead manage any issues with bleeding.
I went back a week later, had the cancer removed and off I went home - at that point wound stitched up and no problem - woke in the middle of the night with the dressing over the site inflated like a balloon with blood. Changed the dressing, got up in the morning - back to square 1 dressing full of blood again - back to hospital to try and get the bleeding stopped. Finally stopped and then multiple dressing put over wound( this was on Friday) told to come back on Monday and they'd check and re-dress, and told that if I had a problem over the weekend to not go to my local A&E as they'd just make a mess of sorting it out, but to take myself over to The Royal and ask them to ring the on call consultant (that was her) to come and attend to the problem.
OK over the weekend, went back on Monday, re-dressed - fine, then went back after 10 days to have the stitches out.
Please don't do it!
If you have not cut yourself since starting Ticagrelor, it's a definite no. I have had problems with nose bleeds all my life, nothing serious enough for medical intervention, just inconvenient, I've had 2 since my HA & stents in February, the 1st took me all day to stop, the second resulted in a trip to the medical centre at Oulton park racing circuit, where I was for the weekend. It's a no from me as well!
I’ve had a very small tattoo done last week on Ticagrelor and aspirin. But it was tiny. The artist said using colour is a problem because they cause more bleeding than black so infilling with colour is a no no. Also most artists would say no as they don’t want the liability if you develop a problem there or later even if you sign a disclaimer . And also bleeding a lot during the process makes it very hard to see the work.
A lot of tattooists will not do a tattoo whilst you are on Ticagrelor or any prescription thinner as it is not covered by their insurance. They will do it once you are just taking aspirin.
Absolutely NO NO NO. No decent tatooist woudl touch you until you have stopped the ticagrelor
My local tattooist won't touch me unless I get a letter from a doctor saying it's ok, and no doctor is going to write such a letter. And I'm not even on anti-coagulants (everything else including aspirin, but not anti-coagulants)!
