Hi, I’m am a bit confused. My husband is now 19 weeks post aortic valve replacement. The GP has taken him off of his bisoprolol 1.25 MH this week but I was told that many stay on it for long term after AVR. Also he is on 75 mg of aspirin but the ZgO has stop his lansopranol so I feel maybe he’s at risk of stomach ulcers.
Basically, is this normal to stop these tablets so soon.
Regards,

Hi! You really have to ask his GP as it could be based on his BP and HR, or any one of a dozen or more blood test results. The 75mg Aspirin is very low dose (a standard Aspirin is 300mg) and if he takes it after breakfast things should be fine. What other medication is he on?
Amlodipine is a CCI (calcium channel inhibitor) which besides lowering BP also acts as an anti-anginal. Ramapril besides lowering BP also helps protect the kidneys in diabetics. It may be with Bisoprolol your GP felt that your husband was over-medicated as regards BP.
Lansoprazole is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor). I have been diabetic for well over 50 years and recall there was something about a decade ago that PPIs interfered with the action of Meformin. This has since been proven to be incorrect so it is worth asking exactly why the Lansoprazole was stopped...
Hi Jewel 17. I guess each case is different. I was on 1.25 mg of Bisoprolol immediately after my AVR last December. I was taken off it 10 weeks after the operation with the consent of my GP and cardiologist. I am fortunate now to be only on my warfarin for the mechanical valve. In my own case it was sending my already low heart rate too low. Personally I was never so glad to be off the things.
I had AVR and aortic root graft 12 weeks ago. I'm currently taking 1.25 Bisoprolol, 75mg Aspirin and 10mg Atorvastatin but due a review.
Prior to my operation I was taking Ramipril to manage slightly high BP. My understanding is that if my BP now drops to be comfortably within 'Normal' range I may be able to stop the Bisoprolol. If BP remains on the high side I may switch from Bisoprolol back to Ramipril.
My surgeon told me the Bisoprolol was to ensure BP didn't go too high while the valve/root are still healing/knitting together with the natural bits.
It is certainly not unusual for people to be taken of BP meds at this point - but every case is different - I confess I tend to trust cardiologist/surgeon more than GP, but then I don't have any other conditions requiring meds/management.
Hi, I no longer trust my GP. I would check with your husband's team at the hospital. I find my consultant's secretary very helpful. At 7 months I am still taking 7.5 mg along with other heart meds.
