Personally, I was drawn to the Apple Watch as I have an iPhone and iPad. So I googled “comparison Apple Watch and Fitbit “ and found an article. After that, I found some more articles.

It very much depends on what you want it for.

If you are already part of the Apple ecosystem as you are, and you can afford it then the Apple watch is the best bet Otherwise I would recommend Garmin

They have an enormous range of excellent products. Definitely generally not as pretty as the Apple watch if that is really important but big functionality

What do you want it to do? What is your budget?

I had an Apple Watch but gave it away to my daughter. I was finding I was using it too much and that dwelling on things too much raised my anxiety. I have a 6 lead Kardiomobile device and a Braun BP and I only use it if I feel unwell. So be carefully it doesn’t become too consuming.

Hi TedSpaniel

That is a really good point

Take a look at the Garmin range. Do all the sports, plots your sleep and heart rate. A watch to in the range to suit most budgets.

Garmin vivoactive for me and the garmin connect app on my phone. I use to track activities , steps, running, cycling (outdoors and stationary turbo training) , swimming, walking and outdoor work on my farm as Cardio, yoga classes .. and my weights sessions .

It gives heart rates, from live time to average for the day and last 7 days , intensity minutes ( as per 150 mins per week guidelines.. I did 750 last week 🤣) . It shows sleep and body battery (recovery) which fascinates me as it seems to know if I have a rare beer in the evening ! Then my body battery doesn’t recover and it shows my sleep is terrible!🤣. So I don’t have evening beers much any more.

I’ve taken some screen shots and joined them together so that you can get an idea . I record my blood pressure to the app on my phone , it also shows a VO2 max score and tells me my fitness age is 38 when I’m 62… I think it’s trying to butter me up 🤣.. probably inaccurate. I hope it’s of use to you 🦏

Garmin for me, in my unqualified and biased opinion - haven't tried any others, but very pleased with my watch (Garmin Forerunner 255, doesn't do ECG though)

Hi Junie2

To be honest it depends on what you want it for, it’s ok for measuring your steps, how long out running for, but and a big but I wouldn’t use it for anything like heart beats or ECG.

My GP said these watches have caused a lot of problems with patients having panic attacks or even anxiety with the readings they received from their watch, she said bin it, it causes too many problems.

Hi Yellow

I started thinking about it, when my glucose monitor stopped working, but don’t think smart watches do that, so I was interested in what they can do. But you do make a good point , don’t want to get obsessive with it.

Thanks for your reply

That’s shockingly poor advice for the majority of people though . Plenty of hearty athletes and rehabbbers no how to use them. GPs give some terrible general advice.

my cardiologist told me she didn’t believe they could work until her friend sent her an ecg if AF from her Apple Watch. I was asked if I had an Apple Watch, I said yes and she took me off apixiban saying the long term risk out weighs the benefit as my watch would tell me for sure if AF returns. I also have a friend who suffers from AF and his Apple Watch alerts him every time. That’s just my experience.

Hi, I have a Fitbit watch and the Fitbit app on my phone. Every morning I check it to find out how I slept 🙄. On a serious note I had a Heart attack in April , I was feeling a bit crap and watch was showing resting heart rate of 120 and not going down (normally about 55) so I knew something was wrong , called 111, ended up in hospital where their monitoring of heart rate was very close to what Fitbit was saying. I use it to track steps, exercise, oxygen levels (which generally show a bit lower than the finger monitor medics use) breathing rate, and other useful health info. I take people's point about worrying but I might have delayed ringing 111 had I just felt crap and not had the Fitbit monitoring my RHR..good luck

I'm a bit late to the party but have found that the Apple watch is too big for me as I have quite small wrists and the clock face is quite large. I found that fitbit does what I need it to do and the clock face is a lot smaller.

Hi Suebedoo

My wrists are small, will have to look at the sizes.

Thanks so much
