Conflicting meds

Hi I am new to this site and feeling a bit of a fraud as reading all your posts mine are trivial really . I take amlodipine for bp it’s has come down luckily . I am also prescribed Atorvastatin for high cholesterol but cannot take as I have IBS and it makes my symptoms worse . Dr says it’s up to me wether I take or not . I would be grateful for any advice as I hate missing out on family events due to IBS but the meds do not help . Thanks

What type of IBS do you have? I take atorvastatin and am ok

in reply toDarkshades

Hi it varies depending on what I eat still not sorted all my triggers out and they seem to vary day to day , As you know it is a bit of a nightmare wondering what to eat to keep it under control . At next review will speak to G P but I have tried so many things to try to lessen the effects of IBS I am wary of any new meds . Thanks for replying .

There is a U.K. IBS site that might help you if you need to vent lol

The most common trigger is dairy products

Keeping a food diary make help you spot the culprits but I also think, think of tolerance and intolerance levels, so that’s why that it seems one day you can eat something and the next time you can’t (you’ve reached your intolerance level for that item) ... unfortunately everyone is different and it’s a learning curve. Say for example I could eat a fried egg once a week, but not twice! Also combinations of foods .. example you might be able to eat sausages and egg or bacon and egg but if you eat bacon sausage and egg, it doesn’t agree with you 🤷‍♀️

Many with IBS can’t tolerate salads

Imodium is the go to for IBS D

Something like laxido for IBS C

Buscopan and/or Colofac are good for bloating and cramps

Many supermarkets stock dairy free products

Are you B12 deficient? As there seems to be a possible link to that and diverticulosis and low vit D

Wishing you all the very best going forward x

Hi morning thank you for your reply . I agree with your suggestions re over the counter meds I have them all if needed . Have been tested for vit D and B12 and take supplements . Not thought about dairy though although I do use oat milk I still have yoghurt so that may be useful . Thank you

I must say I am rather surprised by your GP's attitude. I would have expected that at the very least you would have been offered Pravastatin or Simvastatin to see whether the situation improved. Better still one of the more modern statins. I am on 10mg of Rosuvastatin on alternate days which works very well with minimal drug load on my system.

i was prescribed intitially 80 mgs atorvastatin sometime in 2017 but after about 5 months of taking it my vision started to deteriorate.i could not view tv and celphone for several hours because i experience eye strain.then my doctor cut it to 40 mgs and my eye strain has improved a little bit but still could not view tv and celphone for longer hour.then i decided to take 20 mgs daily and the eye strain is almost gone but not completely.today i enjoy watching tv,computer and smartphone with just 20 mgs atorvastatin.

Hi I have not experienced any eye problems although I am due an eye test soon so who knows . Hope yours continues to improve . I am beginning to think that everyone is so different and in the end it’s a cost benefit effect that you have to weight up yourself . Thanks to everyone for your helpful comments
