History of myocarditis and COVID. Anyone?

Curious to know if anyone with history of myocarditis/pericarditis has had an episode of COVID.

If so, how did it felt? Did the heart got inflamed again?

Thank you very much.

This is a very interesting q cookie95 I’d be interested to hear the answer too.

I’d guess as with any virus after a myocarditis episode the chance of it occurring is more likely (but still very low). The first couple of viruses I had after my myocarditis gave me low-level heart pain but has since died away now.

Thanks for your response The Bear!

Glad to hear the following viruses didn’t trigger big heart pains :)

Let’s see if someone in this group has had an experience with COVID.

Excellent discussion starter!

So far no Covid, I think, who knows without testing? I could have had one of the milder strains, been mainly asymptomatic and never become unwell enough to trouble the doctors - many of the symptoms of Covid are the same as residual aches, etc, from recurrent pericarditis and myocarditis so it's hard to tell for sure without testing.

I do worry about contracting the more severe strain so despite being removed from the high-risk shielding group I continue to be extra careful.

Hopefully someone with one or both of our conditions (pericarditis and/or myocarditis) who has had a positive Covid test will post in to let us know their experience.

Thanks Sunnie2day. Same!! I keep on being careful just in case. It makes me feel more confortable.

Hi Cookie. I don't have myo/peri but I do have heart failure and I had covid back in March (I had all the then minor symptoms including loss of taste/smell, breathlessness, fatigue, muscle ache) and still had the antibodies when I was tested on 29th July. I won't know if this has affected my heart until I have my next echo - hopefully sometime in January - but I don't feel I've been affected.

Thank you Alison! I’m glad to hear yours wasn’t a very strong reaction and that you feel it hasn’t affected the heart. All the best.

I’m hoping not to find out the effect of the virus on my heart conditions other than reading any research!

I am also continuing to be very careful and only go out for essential activities such as exercise (walking in the park) and medical appointments if they require a face to face meeting.

Same here. Other than daily exercise and doctor appointments I also try to not risk it given past history. Keep it up!

Hi , I had Myocarditis, Pericarditis and Pleuritis this time last year , it took about six months to feel ok. In March (thanks to Cheltenham) my husband tested positive for Covid and was quite poorly , weeks later he was positive for antibodies, weirdly despite my autoimmune issues , heart issues and lung issues I never caught it ! I know that doesn't really help but it would seem we are all so very different!

IrisCarter profile image

Really pleased that you didn’t catch it. Were you especially careful when he developed symptoms?

Sevenstar in reply to IrisCarter

Well back in March we didn't know so much but as precautionary measures he was banished to the spare room and bathroom (where I'm afraid to say I made him stay for 2 weeks) ! Other than that we are together and watched television together (but not next to ) . I used rubber gloves for cups/saucers etc and lots of clean towels and tea towels !

Left his room for 2weeks after recovery before I did sheets etc .

You did really well!

I know I was lucky , could have had a very bad time ! My husband thinks in my case it's all about T cells but who knows !

You did VERY well not to catch it 👍🏼

Either that or you were practicing excellent hygiene. 😉

Like others here I have not had Covid 19 but am very interested to see if anyone does come back saying they have. I had Myopericarditis and have been recovering for a couple of years & left with permanent damage to my heart. I remain super cautious and practically still shielding as Im very anxious about catching another deadly virus 😞

I had Covid in March (mild) then presented in July with myocarditis. Unknown whether the two are related but I’m usually fit and well. Still suffering from high heart rate and breathlessness any time I do any physical activity :(

Sorry to hear that you still have symptoms, it’s really frustrating that it takes so long to feel better.

In July, how did they realise you had myocarditis? I.e. did you go to A&E with chest pain?

I woke up one day with high heart rate. As I work at a hospital, I told a colleague and they admitted me to the day clinic for investigations. It was only when I had my echo in late August that a myocarditis diagnosis came about

Hi everyone. Thank you for your comments and for your support. I have heart problems due to stress, so I'm very afraid of getting covid. I have heard that there is a very high mortality rate in people who have chronic health problems. So I take all the necessary precautions, wear a protective mask that filters the air, wash my hands and disinfect them, wear disposable gloves on public transport or supermarket, take vitamins and take evening walks to boost my immune system. By the way, I wear a quality mask that filters the air and protects me from all viruses, you can read more about it on pandemicpal.net/n95-masks-c... .

Thought my input would be relevant here. Newly diagnosed with acute myocarditis 4 weeks ago at age 22. Cardiologists believe it was likely COVID as my whole house tested positive 5ish week prior ( I didn't see the point in getting tested with all my housemates positive). Largely digested the diagnosis and now doing everything I can to heal.

Thank you for sharing!! Did the doctors say that it was a Covid-induced myocarditis?

I was 23 when got acute myocarditis (due to a virus) and I was fit and healthy. Have made an almost full recovery now 1.5 years later but still struggle with chest pain sometimes, but nothing like before.. now taking lots of precaution to avoid getting COVID as directed by my cardiologist, just in case it triggers another episode...

Hope yours gets better soon!! It does take patience and lots of rest, but it gets better 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 All the best!

They cannot be certain because I didn't get a test and therefore I technically haven't been positive but that is what they suspect. It's nice to hear from someone of a similar age and that you have almost made a full recovery - gives me some hope! Haha yes I have done way to much googling online and I am now taking every precaution with COVID - nasty stuff for the heart! Thank you - hoping that remaining stubborn chest pain resolves itself for you soon!

Hi, I had pericarditis in 2007, I am 57 and had a lit of chest pain just before Christmas, 5 days later I was tested positive for covid. I have continued to have chest pains and breathlessness. I recently had an echo, which came back as the left side of my heart not pumping properly, moderate to severe. The doctor has put me on rampiril and bisoporolol. Waiting to see a cardiologist next month. I had an echo in2017 which was normal. I do wonder if covid has caused my heart problems .

Thank you very much for sharing your story. I hope you get better with the medication!!

I’ve heard from my cardiologist that he’s seen a substantial increase in myo/pericarditis since COVID began and he was shocked to see so many people with it when he got called in to cover in an NHS hospital (he’s usually just Private because he’s almost going to retire now).

Stay strong and take care 💪 you’ll get out of it!!

I dont have a diagnosis for myocarditis. I had Delta covid in September and since then have been having chest pain when I exercise (walking) cant even think about running as I did before covid. Do you think I should get it checked out? occasional breathlessness and tightness of the chest when I am in a panic about something. I don't have high blood pressure.

Cookie95 profile image
Cookie95 in reply to DeepSouth

Hello! Yes, 100% go check it out 😊 it will help you get better faster if you know what it is! Sounds a bit like myocarditis to be honest. And leaving these conditions untreated is riskier. Best of luck!! Hope it is nothing or if it is that you make a full recovery soon 💪💪💪
