I have had AF for 4 years. I have had 2 ablations both unsuccessful and several cardioversions but have only stayed in sinus rhythm for a short time after each one. The cardiologist is trying rate control now but I am on 15mg bisoprolol and 200mg Amiodorone plus Losartan 10mg. I get very tired and breathless but do not feel my heart is racing or pounding. Now suggested I have a pacemaker and ablation of the AV node. This is the last resort and I am really worried about the consequences of this procedure and whether it is beneficial to have it done,
This is my first post by the way, sorry it is so long!

I had a pacemaker fitted which allows me to take Bisoprolol without it dropping my rate to low, if this didn't work I was to have an AV ablation but so far so good and ablation is on hold. The pacemaker has certainly made a big difference to my quality of life and should I need ablating at some stage I would be happy to go for it.
Like you I have had 2 ablations & many cardioversions which only last 3 months at the most. I am to have a DCI (pacemaker/defibrillator) fitted on 2nd Sep. After 6 weeks my cardiologist wants to ablate the AV Node & that scares me! Don’t fancy being totally reliant on a piece of technology. I’ve been told the ablate & pace the last resort for my heart failure.
Yes I feel very concerned too. Worried about what would happen if it didn’t work, no way back, since as you say last resort but on the other hand don’t want to take medication for ever because of side effects.
Sorry to hear that Pippa. I had 6 cardioversions and 2 ablations. After 2nd was in and out of Afib for 3 months (considered normal) and am now Afib free albeit some PACs. My retired friend had 4 ablations and is now okay.
I had a pacemaker fitted 3 months ago and a node ablation 2 months ago both procedures very quick and painless once the ablation took place my pacemaker was set at 81bpm now adjusted to 61bpm made life a lot better would recommend both procedures.
