Hi all,
Can I just ask did any of you have puffy ankles after AVR and did the puffiness go even if they were puffy before the surgery.
Thank you.

Hi. I hope your husband is continuing to mend and the AF issues are sorting themselves out. Not sure if this helps, but I had puffy wrists, fingers and ankles - fluid retention basically - immediately after the op, while still in hospital. Was prescribed a diuretic that in a day of constant dashes to the toilet got rid of it and after that was fine. But as I say that was pretty early on? I think fluid retention is fairly normal initially but if it's persistent and causing discomfort I'd say get a second opinion from his GP if you can? But good luck!

Hubby had a quadruple bypass and was initially on diuretics to prevent fluid retention but they were stopped after a few months. However he began to retain fluid again and was put back on them and now takes a daily low dose. He seems fine now and isn’t constantly needing to pee!
I am still on diuretics after my AVR, though dose as been reduced. If it’s uncomfortable mention it to GP maybe needs a bit of help. Having his legs raised can help whenever he is sitting.
Glad to read he is doing well after his op,
Take care Pauline
Hi Jewel. My ankles and feet have always puffed up in hot weather (ie for years before my heart attack, and in the present heat), but in my case it seems to be just me, not fluid retention - I've tried Furosemide (diuretic) and it really doesn't make me pee more!
Furusemide. you have to clear the dirty water off around the heart.
