Is it safe for heart attack patients with 4 stents to do push ups after 2 years
Assuming you have been doing other exercises involving weights, then I don't see why not, if you haven't then i would build up to them, jumping straight in to own body weight exercise may be too much!
I am just 2yrs post SCA & triple bypass, I (very) slowly built up my weight training, it gradually included bench press, pec deck, pullovers etc. With lockdown i decided to start doing press ups, now do 4 set of 20-10 reps.
Hey that's great tes since lock down I've been doing the cardio exercise the bhf give also combined weights arms chest. Sit ups leg raises. Been much more active than normal walking I had my heart attack and stents put in jan 2018.. cheers great to knw
Just take it easy the 1st couple of times, slowly increase reps / sets.
The 1st couple of times i did them I only did 6/8 reps 2/3 sets, i was a bit tentative but that was down to being wary of my sternum!
Good luck
Thanks yes I plan to take it slow 30 secs see how much I can do not pushing my self slowly . Thanks again take care god bless
Before my cabg x5 two years ago I would pump out hundreds of press ups every day on top of my regular training. Now I hold off a bit.I exercise every day but not as hard as I used to.Think it may be the medication holding me back.I find if I overdo it with press ups or weights the next day it feels like I've got a big plaster on my chest being ripped off slowly.Take care and enjoy.x
Thanks
I would just double check with your GP. If it is safe to do so, I would firmly recommend the staggered approach as used by the cardiac rehab teams. Start with standing push ups against a wall. (The further you place your feet away, the harder the exercise). Once you are used to a few sets of these, then consider moving to gentle push ups on the floor. Start by doing them on your knees and over time build it up. Take your time, don’t rush it. Good luck.
I think you'll be fine doing press ups. The Cardio Rehab course that used to run pre lockdown featured a very mild kind of press up (against a wall), but as all the exercises on the course were pretty mild then I'd guess you'll be fine, if in doubt consult your GP or phone one of the British Heart Foundation cardio nurses. In any event I certainly hope they are okay as I'm currently completing over a thousand press ups each week!
One thing you need to be really careful about is warming up and cooling down. On the cardio rehab course they explain that all the tiny arteries and capillaries need to be gently warmed up and enlarged before you begin serious exercise, so that needs 10-15 minutes of a structured warm up routine before commencing serious exercise. And at the end of your exercise you need to slowly cool down, the medication most of us take means we're susceptible to fainting if we just finish our routines and walk away.
Good luck!
