Chest/back pain with breathlessness. Any leads please?

Hello. I was at work in Jan, sitting at a computer and I had a sharp pain in my chest and breathlessness and felt hot and sweaty. It calmed down quite quickly. I went to the gp and they prescribed gtn just in case, pending an xray, ecg. Ecg was normal. Xray showed slight enlargement of heart. An echocardiogram was requested and was eventually booked in for 19th march. No more issues occurred until 26th feb, when i woke up with a sharp pain in my back (near my left shoulder blade) and felt in left chest too, with breathlessness. Also when i blew my nose, there was a bit of blood in nasal mucus. I went to gp and was told to go to the casualty department and get checked. Again ecg was normal, troponin slightly raised ~12 (when repeated was also 12, therefore deemed negative for heart attack). Xray again showed slightly enlarged heart. D-dimer was negative for pulmonary embolisms. In the absence of any acute findings, i was discharged. I remained tired, breathless and with this strange chest/pain and struggled to do much. Walking on flat was awkward, with stairs rediculously hard. I have been pretty much bed/chair bound since. The echocardiogram was cancelled on the 19th due to this coronavirus outbreak, with no idea when it is to be rebooked for. I went back to casualty on the 26th march with the same sharp chest/back pain and breathlessness. Again no problems with ecg/troponin/coag screen so discharged again. No xray this time. Health just feels so up and down. Ok sometimes then pain/breathlessness comes on again with a vengeance and feel really ill.

Of note is i had 5 weeks worth of cold with cough before Christmas, with blood in sputum. Also had an infected wisdom tooth, extracted on 5th march, that was definitely leaking into my mouth.

Wonder if anyone has any idea of what might be going on? Getting very worried as due to this coronavirus, i cannot seem to get any further investigations done, due to echo test cancellations and the gp not really wanting to push it, as I'm on 12 weeks isolation due to also being immunosuppressed, for autoimmune hepatitis (this appears in remission at this point).

Going crazy with it really, but from reading, symptoms seem similar to what people have had for myocarditis. Any ideas or similarities? Or else i guess i have just got to bide my time until i can get investigations, whenever that might be.

Pete.

Hi Pete

Welcome to the forum.

None of us here are registered healthcare professionals so are unable to say what is causing your symptoms.

However I acknowledge your feelings about the uncertainty of the surreal times we are living through.

Many of us are living in limbo with face to face appointments and routine investigations postponed.

Not knowing why you have the symptoms you are experiencing can undermine our whole wellbeing.

The Cardiac nurses on the BHF helpline are very knowledgeable and I suggest you give them a call to talk through your concerns.

Telephone 0300 330 3311

Medicine sometimes is an art as much as a science. It took sometime for my Cardiologist to diagnose my particular heart condition so unfortunately as you say as patients somtimes we need to be patient not easy I know especially at present.

I hope your wait is not too long and you get the answers you need.

Thanks so much Milkfairy for your kind words and advice. It certainly is uncertain times and hope upon hope that everyone seeking treatment and tests for their conditions eventually gets it and it doesn't affect their recovery greatly. I also hope that all those burdened with the coronavirus are able to get well soon and those relatives who are affected will be ok. The NHS are amazing and are doing such a great job under the circumstances, with extreme bravery and with limited resources. Its just my luck to get ill during this and hate to trouble anyone, but just really worried that i don't jeopardize my recovery by not seeking the help i need in a timely manner. As you say, many will be in that particular boat and I wish everyone well.

Hi Peter! You have my sympathy! I've had a similar experience but I'm not saying your the same as me but an example of keeping an open mind. Like you I started with gastro and breathing issues - both investigated by different departments and nothing found. Then tiredness and fatigue turned to syncope and eventually my 'event'. All the time being told my heart was fine/strong - still telling me that. Anyway, lots more tests and bloods. Incidentally Milkfairy was really kind and helpful a while back ruling out a few things.

Still in pain/breathless and stuff but I'm now with a Rheumatologist who deals with a surprisingly wide number of issues including autoimmune issues. It feels like the end of a long journey but my lesson is keep on pushing to find out. I experienced a lot of apathy from medical people but kept on pushing for answers. Look at your diet/ exercises in the meantime and moderate both. Try lying on the bed and do basic breathing exercises- its helps body and mind.

I hope when this is over you can get back on the case. Keep notes!

Sorry it's so long.
