Massage lightly the scar with E45 or bio oil. The sensation you are feeling is probably nerve ends healing. Unfortunately this may last some time but massage should help.

It is hard to say. I suspect one of two things; i) infection - keep an eye on it and contact your GP if it doesn't settle or ii) you have overdone it - for the first six weeks you should lift nothing heavier than a bag of sugar. Take it easy and if things do not improve ring your GP.

Hi Sam,

I am post op 5 months now and my scar still feels tender. I doubt it is an infection, but there are lots of other signs for that too, redness, fever often itchy too. There is a lot going on under the skin too, so it may be something healing, a long way to go yet I am afraid.

Try not to worry, the scars do stay tender for a long time. I couldn’t wear clothing that touched it for ages (over 6m). Do you have any areas where the skin is open? If not, I agree it’s unlikely to be infection - look for redness or the area feeling more warm than other skin.

I couldn’t massage for a while, but I did gentle stretching exercise (first of my upper body and then when I felt more confident, very gentle stretching of the skin around the scar) and whilst this sometimes pinched a little, I think it de-sensitised me & the skin, and perhaps also reduced the eventual scarring. Once I could do that, I moved on to gentle massage if actual scar with bio oil.

Thanks, there are no red or open parts. I did eub in some bio oil. As suggested, Which I think has helped

Your experience sounds familiar. Parts of my scar have healed completed and the lower part is still healing. My challenge is that as time has gone on the bit that is still healing gets very itchy, I've resisted scratching. Medics say its healing well and I have a daily application of Bio Oil.

Keep going

Best Regards
