I've got a suspected kidney infection and in a lot of pain.Ive just been given "Nitrofurantoin " Antibiotics to start taking ASAP I've also done the standard urine test that has been sent off but who knows when that will come back?

My question is are these antibiotics OK with someone like me with heart disease and micro vascular angina.

I can't. seem to find much about them.

The sad thing is I've had this pain for weeks but thought it was a muscle.

so ignored it to a degree and now in a lot of pain.

Any help would be valuable.

just don't need another condition to worry about with the this horrendous virus on the rise amongst us.

Hi Rob

Have they sent your urine to be tested?

A ' dip stick' that they perform in the surgery will pick up blood and white blood cells in your urine.

I get alot of pain in my kidneys and this was thought to be originally due to urinary tract infections now thought by my Cardiologist to be due the vasospasms that I experience in all the blood vessels in my body.

If you need further reassurance about taking antibiotics I suggest you talk to a pharmacist.

I have never had any problems when I have been prescribed antibiotics.

A urinary tract infection is not nice. Drink plenty of fluids, hot water bottles are helpful.

Take paracetamol for the pain.

Rest.

I hope you feel better soon.

Stay safe stay well.

Hi Milkfairy

Long time no see! Lovely to hear from you once again! I know i can rely on you for advice.

Funny you mention the urine sample because i had to plead for it over the phone. There not letting anyone into surgery unless urgent now. So i had to speak through box on wall to then be told i would get a call from the doctor.. I did and explained what i could. Shes prescribed the said antibiotics and ive started them this evening. Im actually thinking it maybe kidney stones.. I will take antibiotics and wait for urine sample to return next week hopefully.

But does a basic urine sample pick up kidney stones? I just thought it picked up a UTI and i think thats what she's hoping it is. Wouldn't i need a blood test for confirmation of kidney stone? I just know its coming in waves and is killing my lower right back. Shivers now and then that made me think it was coronavirus so its all happening Milkfairy.. So glad to hear from you.

Hope yoir well

Hi Rob,

The usual way to diagnose kidney stones is to have an ultrasound scan.

Also they pick up blood in your urine sample when they use a dip stick.

If you have a fever and alot of pain you need to ring 111.

I am not doing too bad thanks. I have my family at home with me. So a very full and noisy household!

Thanks Milkfairy

So are you saying the basic urine sample sent off could pick up if its kidney stones as well as an infection

No you will need an ultrasound to confirm whether you have a kidney stone.

Passing a kidney stone is as painful as being in labour!

Ive heard that said before. I will give the antibiotics a good week and see how it goes.. Incidentally ive woken with little twinges on and off radiating from left of chest down arm.. So bit concerned what that is now? Im now living part time in my bedroom while everyone is downstairs due to my 6 year old coughing in the night and this morning. Im living on my nerves at the moment Milkfairy.

I also wondering if the fact I upped my dose of vit c has caused it.. Oxalates.. As that can cause issues with the kidneys as some food can thats high in oxalates.

Pethaps use this time to identify which stratergies will help you to manage your stress and anxiety.

Anxiety is not helpful to any heart patient.

Living with uncertainty and the unpredictability of Microvascular or vasospastic angina is tough.

Maybe listen to some music, read , meditate. Watch some keep fit, yoga and Tai Chi YouTube videos?

Insight timer is a free app with loads of stratergies that may help.

Stay safe and well.

Hi, I had similar on Thursday, pain in left side, back ache, shivers, aching joints, nausea, completely lethargic. It all happened quite quickly and I'm feeling a lot better today (3 days later) but still have a slight nagging pain in side

My husband is convinced it's coronavirus!

So with your symptoms sounding so similar, maybe it is!

I haven't had chance to have any tests done yet, but will update you if anything significant!

Best wishes

Thank you so much for letting me know these antibiotics are ok. I worry all the time now the moment i have to take any new medicines with heart disease. Yes i was prescribed it by my doctor but had to ring up again and demand a urine sample too.

Hi, have you tried taking D-Mannose! It’s recommended by the NHS and available to buy from Boots, Holland and Barrett etc. It’s a sugar that hooks onto ecoli bacteria and pulls them out of your system when you wee. It usually works a treat. In the meantime, you have my sympathies.

This is very interesting but i wont know what kind of bacteria it is.

As I understand it from my GP, the vast majority of UTIs are ecoli infections. The lab test will say but you might have to ask specifically.

I never knew that

Ecoli wasn't on my mind to be honest

If you are unsure about tablet interactions then download the app "MedScape" from the play store.

Hi Rob, if prescribed from your GP that is fine to take. I have to take lots of heart medication and take a prophylactic antibiotic for persistent urine infections once a day but antibiotic is changed to a different one after 3 months. Be aware your antibiotic will colour your urine so don't panic. Hope your better soon.

What I am getting is hot flushes and very rare shiver with tiredness..I'm hoping it's more the kidney issue than this virus.

I've been on the antibiotics since Friday now and no different and in a lot of pain.So I'm hedging my bets on it now being a stone.

Hi,

How are you?

After replying to your message about kidney pain, I 've now had 6/12 of the listed coronavirus symptoms after first suffering a pain in my side.

I've since done some research to find out that the kidneys are affected in a high percentage of COVID-19 infections.

I don't really want to go to my local surgery as I will still be infectious.

Just wondering if you are happy to share your outcome?

Many Thanks

Roz

Rob where did you get your information from regarding kidney and coronavirus.

I don't know what you want me to say or how to answer you.Im on my last dose of antibiotics for suspected kidney infection but I've never heard of kidneys being affected by coronavirus especially when I have a heart condition. Wouldn't it of gone to my heart first? My pain has been there for several weeks.
