Advice on Corona please
Hi
Please see the NHS advice
List of conditions for extremely vulnerable who should be shielded and self isolate for 12 weeks

Social Distancing
I gave a pacemaker for total heart block, atrial fibrillation, and mitral valve regurgitation. Lung cancer surgery last year. Taking rivaroxaban and ramapril. In my opinion I am a high risk for Coronavirus so my husband and I are self isolating for 12 weeks. Hubble has high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Stay safe indoors.
Do you have to wait for approval from doctor to isolate for 12 weeks? I have pacemaker for complete heart block, am on apixaban, beta blockers, and have a clotting disorder, however i am also a nurse and im torn, my colleagues are super busy, i havent heard from my gp and dont want to let any one down, but also dont want to die doing my job.
Hi,
I also work for the NHS and can understand your desire to carry on looking after your patients. I also have a pacemaker for heart block (Mobitz Type II in my case) and have decided that this is not a particular risk, so am still working. I work in the Path Lab, so am not on the front line and feel fairly safe at work.
If I were in your shoes, however, I would think twice about working - you can't help anyone if you are in ICU.
At the end of the day, it's your decision, so I'd like to offer my best wishes and hope you make the right one for yourself.
BTW, if you have a clotting disorder, why are you on apixaban?
I clot spontaneously (blood too sticky) , apixaban to thin the blood to try to prevent this. I am going to work. Spoke to my own GP, she told me my risk is no higher than anyone else in obtaining Covid (as long as i utilise PPE), so i am not in the 12 week risk criteria, my issue would be more dangerous apparently if i contracted it and needed hospital intervention so i just better not catch it 🙈. Thank you for your reply.
Thanks for your reply. I've learned something I didn't know.
I didn't mention that I also have COPD ( my own fault for smoking) so it puts me in the "underlying conditions" bracket. I think this coronavirus pandemic is the most dangerous thing we've ever had to face, so I plan to do whatever I can to help out and face what consequences, there are (if any). The hospital I work for is gearing up to do the testing for the new Nightingale hospital in East London, so I expect we'll be really busy for the next few weeks.
Good for you for working, but please keep safe.
Best wishes.
