Atelectasis (partial lung collapse) and Coronavirus

I had an AVR in May 2018 and as a result of the operation I suffered a partial collapse of my left lung (Atelectasis) with fluid on the lung. I was monitored frequently with chest X-Rays after the operation and advised to do breathing exercises to help the condition and over a period of time the lung recovered. I still often have to do these exercises to help my breathing but this has not been an impediment to my life and I am able to swim, walk and cycle regularly. Would the Atelectasis make me more vulnerable to the Coronavirus?

Hi, I have atelectasis in my left lung due to an injury and 4 broken ribs. My fall was 6 months ago! I haven't been told about any exercises- it would definitely help. Could you expand on this please? I have RA so any relief of the constant pain I am experiencing in my left side would be great.

Hi Moomin 8,

I was told to block one nostril and then with the other nostril breathe in gently for 8 seconds, then hold for 8 seconds and then breathe out for 8 seconds and do this 5 times for each nostril. Not only does it inflate the damaged lung and I find helps my breathing but it is also a technique used for relaxation.

I hope it helps.

Keep well.
