Ramipril Cough

Hello,

I've been taking Ramipril since the beginning of January and didn't seem to have any side effects. However, I've been suffering with a severe cough for the past 3 weeks and was wondering if anyone else had a delay in theirs starting?

Also, the cough is so severe it sometimes induces vomiting (sorry for being graphic) and I end up with eyes and nose running. Is this normal?

Thanks in advance.

A cough is very common, I had one at first but vomiting definitely isn't.Clearly ramipril isn't for you but I'm sure your GP could sort out an alternative.

Thank you. It's the severity of the cough that's causing the vomiting, but I will speak to my GP.

Hi.

I had the same. Was fine first couple of months then a catching cough increased in severity and frequency as the weeks went on. I too suffered with the cough inducing retching and vomiting. After a visit to GP I was switched from Ramipril to Losartan and the coughing stopped within days.

Good luck, I hope you get this resolved.

I have been on Ramipril and have had a persistent cough. I will be asking about this at my next appointment. Thanks for posting this, I assumed I just had a cough.

Don’t wait - as a cough can be a side of Ramipril and your GP can sort this for you.

I have a check up on Friday. My GP has a 4 week wait.!!

That’s great - you can always contact your GP and ask for a GP to call you back.

I tried that last week. They didn’t call back 🙁

Ring again and tell your GP receptionist you have been told by a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse that you have to be seen as a matter of urgency. Any probs get back to me. As this is my job.

I have spoken to my cardio nurse who has said they will review on Friday. I am very disappointed with the new system at my GP.

The Cardio Nurse should be able to arrange for the Ramipril to be changed. It is often given as a first choice and there are other medications available if not It’s not suitable.

Ramipril did not suit me either! The dry cough causes the retching and then that scratches your throat and makes the cough worse! I also developed an itchy rash so watch out for that too, eventually I have settled on Bisoprolol as an alternative and it seems to work well 👍

I thought they did different things. Ramipril is an ace inhibitor whereas bisoprolol is a beta blocker. I take both.

Yes, I had the Ramipil cough, it built up gradually and got so bad I couldn't sleep and had a similar reaction to you. I persisted with Ramipil too long. It took about 3 week for the cough to subside when I was changed onto an alternative drug.

Hello N1kk1B. Its only since joining this group and people mentioning this. Makes me wonder now. Because i was put on 2.5mg 1 a day of Ramapril 20 yrs ago. Was on it for a good 15 yrs before it was changed. But i have a cough and runny eyes and nose in a morning after getting up. But seems once i have had a nice cuppa tea. The coughing goes. But i also have C.O.P.D as well. Hope you can get some help Brian

years ago I started on Ramopril but developed the cough. Changed to Amlodopine (I think) and it went immediately. Ask GP for alternative

Hi it had the same effect on me, stopped the tablet and cough disappeared x

Was it OK stopping the tablet? Did you suffer at all or did you switch to an alternate medicine? I'm worried about stopping the tablets due to the coughing.

I did swap to a different tablet but cant remember which one though I'm on Bisoprosol now & am ok with that do have a slight dry cough on a morning but it's not so bad

Hi I had the same and they swtitched me to entresto. Started at a lower dose but up to the higher dose now. But no cough. Maybe ask your doctor or consultant to try that. Hope it gets sorted.

Thank you everyone. I'm going to have a chat to my GP about an alternative med. Only issue is, I'm allergic to beta blockers 🙈 Thanks again x

Hi, I too had the Ramapril cough which got so bad I was awake half the night and like you, retching. It started about 2 months after I began taking it. My pharmacist worked it out in the end and then my GP changed it to Candesarten. No problems with that.

Hope you get it sorted.

You need to speak to your GP, the cough is very common with Ramipril. My GP changed me from Ramipril to Losarten because of the cough. No side effects from Losarten, it works well for me. Good luck N1kk1B, don’t put up with it as it won’t go away sadly xxx
