I've reflected on the same question, when I dug into it there was a clear answer. All ACE inhibitors (so not just Ramipril) tend to prevent the break down of a particular compound (I forget the name) this compound tends to build up in the respiratory tract which then causes the cough. If you google it I'm sure you'll quickly find the same answer...just without the embarrassing memory gaps!

I had the Ramipril cough for months - I took it every morning with all the other meds. I was admitted to hospital and because my blood pressure was so low (!!!) I was given the dose at night. I continued to take it at the end of the day and after a week the cough had miraculously disappeared and, nearly six months later, has not returned. I have no idea why this happened but so pleased it did.... good luck it is such an annoying dry cough it drives you nuts.

I had the annoying Ramipril cough, resulting in even worse sleep than normal. My doctor eventually changed me on to Losartan and the cough went. The two drugs work differently so not suitable swop for everyone.

A cough is a known side effect of Ramipril which’s an ACE. Switch to an ARB for example Candesartan, Losartan... and the cough will quickly disappear.

Hi there I was on Ramipril for 6 months and had a chronic cough and bad stomach, after speaking to cardiologist he changed me to losartan and my cough and bad stomach has all cleared now. I was led to believe the NHS they try people on the cheapest comparisons off medication and apparently 75% off people Ramipril causes the dry cough. Horrible at night waking up my wife and having to go in spare room haha hope this helps., Phil

My husband was on Ramipril, developed the cough, we got meds changed to Losartan. It's taken about 4 weeks for the cough to clear.

I was coughing with the ramipril, it gradually got worse over time. I changed to candesartan and the cough went but now, 18 months on and I'm coughing again! Went to docs and was told that it was probably the meds which making my blood pressure low my nose is running all the time (sorry!) and is running down my throat at night causing the cough! Long story short, I've been given some nasal spray which is helping I think 2 weeks on. I wonder if it's worth checking that for you? My BP is usually around 100/60 so quite low... Just a thought.
