Where do us heart disease patients stand with this coronavirus?

Rob6868 profile image
63 Replies

Some of you will know me on here and know i have heart disease and MVA

Ive looked at all the info about the virus but wanted to know what happens if us heart disease patients catch this? Will we be taken to hospital or left to self isolate at home where heart issues could end up becoming worse.

It might seem a stupid question but one i would like some help with.

I work in the theatre now and at any one time there could be more than 500 people coming through the door.

Im now wearing gloves at work and obviously keeping up with hygiene. But i have kids and there at school so i have that hazard too.

I wouldn't think heart patients would take priority over any other high risk cases such as cancer patients, or those with lung issues (considered to be the highest risk). I would think it would depend on the severity of your symptons as to whether or not you'll be hospitalised. Having a heart condition doesn't necessarily mean you will become very poorly with it though, if you're unlucky enough to catch it.

Hi

Thay said tonight it would be self isolation at home if anyone in the at risk area caught it.

Hospital admission would only happen if breathing was effected .

Hi Rose, you've just answered something that i was thinking about. I've got Valvular Heart Disease and only 1 lung functioning properly. Also got Asthma and Angina.

But we're not living in the high risk area

and my breathing haven't got any worse. 🤞.So im not gonna worry about it.

Thanks Rose.

Hi

It is a worry

I had HA in May 2019 but also have PMR and use steroids to suppress my Immune system and have a underactive thyroid .

I have been imagining all sorts of things today.

Feeling lightheaded ,missing some heartbeats and numbness in left arm .

Sure its anxiety as If I'm busy I'm fine.

Just follow all the guide lines and look after yourself

Gjkas profile image
Gjkas in reply to Rose54

You look after yourself as well Rose.

It's hard not to touch your face sometimes. I tend to put my thumb in my mouth when I'm thinking.

Like. What if you scratch your head, Then you touch your face.

Oh heck. I've been having palpitations, but I think it's anxiety.

Hope so anyway. Take Care.

I started having tickly cough and I’ve been in isolation over two weeks except one day I had no food so went to the local shop but was covered and washed hands thoroughly now I in so much panic with the thought if it’s the virus I have no other symptoms

We can only do as much as we possibly can. This is a lot more than some are doing. I understand your concerns. Do you have local groups who will send someone to shop or local shops which deliver?

Have you registered as vulnerable on you gov site?gov.uk/coronavirus-extremel...

I wondered the same thing as I have heart disease . Diabetes and asthma. Trying not to worry, but want to carry on as normal, Al I have seen is to keep washing your hands and don’t touch your face. So all I want to do is touch my face,

Rob6868 profile image

I know the feeling 😂especially when i have a right itch on my nose.

Whar gets to me more are the people at work who stand and have the audacity to say 'whats all the fuss its just a flu virus' so uneducated these people and so easy to say when they dont have a condition like ours.

Hi Rob,some people are so ignorant.

I bet they only have to have a bit of a cold and they go on the sick for a couple of weeks. You wanna wind em up and pretend to be coughing and sneezing. I bet you they'd give you a wide berth then. Hahaha. .

Hope you don't get an itchy nose. 😁😅

As regards not touching your face, this is the actual recommendation;-

Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

So basically, you've been out and have come home., washed your hands as per recommendation for 20 seconds - you're then OK to touch your face

Gjkas profile image
Gjkas in reply to Rob6868

No i was lucky there Rob, but only just😁😄. Gave my hands a good scrub though with antiseptic hand wash that I buy from Superdrug..

I was just talking to my Hubby about the Coronavirus.

We are quite lucky really because we live out of Town, in the countryside. But when I have to go to the Royal Gwent Hospital, we have to pass the the outside of the Town Centre. In the Disabled Car Park, not quite opposite the Riverfront Theatre, there are dozens of small tents where the homeless are living .They have no soap or water to have a good wash, let alone wash their hands properly.

They leave Faeces and wee against the walls 🦗🐜🕷🕸.Surely that's a priority, even before the Coronavirus began. Its bound to spread germs. 🐜

I wonder what the Authorities are gonna do about them .Apparently half of them won't budge. .

So the Taxi Driver told us last week.

Oh,im gonna give myself a flipping Heart Attack if I keep worrying about it all. You Take Care. Glo.😚

No because even if you have a clear oral test, the virus has give positive results from anal swabs before and after the illness has any symptoms.

I am quite lucky as I have been told to work ftom home if there is a significant outbreak locally. I know its not an option for most. HR called me in yesterday as they know I am at risk. They had spoken to occy health and got the following info for me. Boost your immune system as much as possible by resting getting loads of sleep and eating loads of fruit and vegetables. If you drink alcohol stop as it lowers the immune system. Go for a walk in the fresh air. They asked me not to use public transport. I work at a zoo and I have been given a box of latex gloves and told to wear them when I am out and about the Zoo. Interesting fact we may have to close if there is a serious outbreak as there is a risk that we could pass it to the primates. I never knew before I worked there that Gorillas get flu jabs too. Keep well and stay safe everyone. My understanding is that oxygen will be available in the the home if you aren't too bad.

Rob6868 profile image
Rob6868 in reply to Hedgehoglady07

I've started wearing latex gloves now at work in the theatre. The cleaners were told to so I've followed.

we have a big ballet competition today so there are loadsa of teenagers around so thankfully I'm nearly finished for the day.

especially after having an angina attack last night and getting breathless..

Where are you based re significant outbreak?

Hedgehoglady07 profile image

in reply to Rob6868

See there are 7 cases there just now (assuming others recovered). Numbers are small and hope it stays that way. Still hygiene for flu too - which will be more prevalent.

In Italy the vast majority of deaths are in the over-75s. (Average age 80, I think). One death in a 24 year old.

And worse amongst those with pre-existing conditions, including CVD.

These sorts of stats will probably be true of all countries wirh good national health services.

It's a good question you raise Rob particularly for those of us who live alone. If you've got symptoms I guess you ring 111 or ring your surgery. But what happens then if you are told to self isolate. Do they send someone round to test you? Will they keep an eye on you remotely? Who makes the decision whether or not you need to go to hospital? I've no idea. Does anybody know anyone who has had it and gone through the process?

Milkfairy profile image
MilkfairyHeart Star in reply to dunestar

We have a drive through testing area set up in a local hospital car park in our area

You ring 111 and they will advise you what to do.

I had pneumonia a while back and it caused a severe angina attack. I kept working not knowing what was wrong until I nearly collapsed and got to hospital where my temp was over 105 so I was put on IV and kept in...I'm dreading that happening again. Its what scares me most.

And I now have our 6 year old coughing and with runny nose at home😧😧😧

Rob6868 profile image
Rob6868 in reply to Rob6868

I'm also now taking large doses of pure AA (ascorbic acid) to boost my immune system. There giving it to the patients in China through IV with good results.. 24g

Gjkas profile image
Gjkas in reply to Rob6868

Im the same Rob. I've had Pleurisy a few times. I've been in hospital twice in the last few years with Pneumonia.

It takes a long time to get over that.

If we ever do..

At the moment I feel absolutely terrible. Cough ,runny nose and feel so weak. The trouble is I've got Fibromyalgia as well as all the other medical issues. So it could be that as well. Im supposed to be going in hospital within the next couple of weeks because I've got an Enlarged Liver,Blocked Bile Ducts,Cyst on the Pancreas,Cysts in the Liver,Cyst on the Kidney and a sludgy Gallbladder with 1 large Gallstone. They said that little bits of the Gallstone could have broken off ,and thats what's causing the Blocked Bile Duct. So the Surgeon said that they'll take the Gallbladder out and sort the Duct out.

But I'm a high risk Patient because I've got 2 Heart Valve's that aren't working properly and also got C.O.P.D ,Asthma and Angina. I failed my Pre Admission Assessment because of my Heart problem. So I had to see the Anaesthetist Consultant. Then had to have another Heart Scan, so that they can have everything ready. just in case anything unexpected happens.

I also have to go straight to HDU after the operation.

Now i got this ruddy cold. Have to get rid of it before i go in. Or they won't do it for me. 🤫😢.OOOH

Keep your fingers crossed 🤞for me Rob. Glo.xx.

Rob6868 profile image
Rob6868 in reply to Gjkas

I think I will keep more than my fingers crossed for you Glo.

I think in all honesty I could run with this if it wasn't for the fact I have a 6 year old daughter.

This heart disease has made me realise so much about mortality and not being here to see my girls grow up.

coronavirus is just one more worry to add to my existing ones.

Rosei profile image

nothing I can say Rob except take care of yourself, we are all vulnerable on here, it seems that if we take sensible precautions we cannot do much more.

Having said that the measure that the government and senior health professionals suggest are ones that we should carry out even without Covid 19 lurkingabout.

Dockdog profile image
Dockdog

This is a difficult point to reassure you on. You see there are many of us out there with high risks by virtue of age and health condition. I had a pericardiectomy two years ago which leaves the heart unprotected from any risk of infection. My lungs are damaged and breathing is a big issue without any infection due to constrictive pericarditis pre op and I have liver damage from the same too. If I am unlucky enough to get coronavirus I would rather if possible avoid a hospital bed and stick with whatever suitable drugs will help to reduce the problem. Hospitals are not the best places to be in when ill! Please try not to worry unduly about this problem and do all you can to avoid infection via your job, consider your health ( and life) comes first which perhaps your employers may have understanding for in the short term. The peak of this is likely to be in 6 months, I firmly believe our infection level will have raised to a 1000 cases by next weekend, it is the nature of the beast. Of course I am worried too, as we mostly all are with any kind of major health issue but we all need to retain calm during this storm. Good luck!

The WHO also recommend to prevent catching this or infact any other virus is washing our hands along with avoiding touching our faces with unwashed hands is the most effective protection.

My husband has just returned from France the first thing he did on his return was to wash his hands .

Statex profile image
Statex in reply to Milkfairy

Something that I have always done from an early age. My mother worked in a private maternity unit and hand washing was drummed into me at an early age. The midwife would not even allow any books into the home a she said they carried germs.

Makes me laugh amongst all the worry

That No one over 60 should go into a supermarket? What if your a day away from your 60th birthday?ooh ooh best not go into supermarket tomorrow as I will be 60 lol....It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic! What is it about anyone that reaches the age of 60?Do you suddenly become suceptible to everything out there? I mean why 60? why not 59? perhaps some of you can see my point?

Statex profile image
Statex in reply to Rob6868

The risk steadily increases from 50 -60, 60-70,70-80 and 80plus .

A person between 60 and 70 has A higher risk of death than a 50 year old etc.

I can see your point Rob.

Oh well, my Hubby and I have got no chance. If the Coronavirus don't get us ,Starvation will. 💀💀

No one over 60 to go into a Supermarket. Well that lets us out..

We are both 76 years young..

Next time my Hubby goes shopping,

Im gonna wrap a scarf 🧣🧤around his nose and mouth, and tell him to get in and out as quick as he can.But even then he's gonna be touching things that other people have touched. 🤔

What about Hospital and Doctors Appointments ..People that has to catch a bus to work.

I was in Clinic a few days ago and someone left a newspaper on one of the chairs. A Man came into the waiting room, picked up the paper,

sat down , then licked his finger to turn the page over. I expect that when he left the waiting room,he would probably have left the newspaper on the chair, and someone else would come in and do exactly the same.

Some people are so stupid. 🤯🤯.

What about the Library ????.

Oh im getting paranoid now about it all. So ill just say. Take Care Everyone..

Glo ❤🤞xx
