Water retention : I have water... - British Heart Fou...
Water retention
Yes. I take 20mg regularly every morning to keep fluid from accumulating around my heart, When I had a large amount of fluid build up in my legs I was prescribed Spironolacton for a short while and it worked miraculously I lost a vast amount of fluid overnight.Others will write of their experience as this is a commonly prescrbed med. for fluid retention.
Good morning , Yes I take 40mg of furosemide every morning and it has helped my water retention and eased my breathing problem a bit. I was relieved when i started taking it in June as it worked for me within 48hrs.
I take a water tablet and helps me a great deal
morning,
I have been on 40mg furosemide for the past 8 years since my replacement valve surgery.
I take it in a morning and it helps my heart not have to work too hard to move the fluid.
You learn to deal with taking it and being near a bathroom for a few hours!
I wish you good luck, you will find it works.
Best wishes Pauline.
I have been suffering with water retention for months and it's driving me round the bend. Some days hardly wee other days it's like a waterfall. But my GP won't prescribe water tablets she has referred me back to the cardiologist and she has asked them to do an echocardiogram as it's been 4 years since my last one. I can put 4lb on in a day and lose it the next . It's not the pain that bother's me as I am born disabled and had pains in my legs my whole life it how tight the skin gets really bugs me . Plus knowing I need a wee and having to sit for few minutes before my body lets it out . Other times it gushes out.
I hope the tablets help you . Sorry if it's to much information but it's driving me round the bend .
I have same problem but doctor said its not water retention but fat yet my socks leave marks on my ankles don't know what's going on
I lost 7st in weight so my legs aren't fat from my knees down . Flabby thighs yes . I can't wear socks because of the pain in my legs which I have had all my life. When I have had operations I couldn't wear the surgical stockings so had heparin injections . They swell because of the water lost 1lb since yesterday.. I know it's not fat as it takes eating 3,500 less calories per week than your body needs to loss Ilb of fat.
Just have to put up with it until I see the cardiologist.
I took for 12 months before my operation. Found they were an issue for about 3 hours so i used to take at 4 am so that I could be fine before I left for work at 730. Made a lot of difference to my breathlessness. Post op no longer required
I have been diagnosed with Lymphodema - I have very swollen lower legs and feet,
In the morning, I take 80mg of Furosemide followed by another 40mg at lunchtime. I still have the swelling but I dare not stray far from a toilet, Furosemide takes no prisoners! If you don’t react straight away, it’s a change of clothes and a shower for you!
You have to learn to adapt your life to live with it!
Hi Alfie33, I have taken Furosemide 40mg for 4 years since my heart attacks in 2020. I usually take 20mg in the morning and 20mg in late afternoon.I find by splitting my dose I sleep better as I do not wake up during the night feeling breathless. Drs aware and happy for me to do this.
Yes I take furosemide 40mgs every morning. It has definitely helped with swelling of my ankles. Also it has helped with my breathlessness- not completely but significantly. One thing you may notice is a quick weight loss. I lost 0ne stone in a week. Went from 13 to 12. It has now stabilised at around 12 stone with me.
Have taken Furosemide, for some time now,I suggest you do not take the second one too late
in the evening, as you will have a disturbed night sleep.
I am only on 20mg and find that after 1 hour it is a case of get to the bathroom fast. Then again after about another 45 mins and again after another 30 mins. Then I am OK for the rest of the day. You will soon get used to how they affect you, wich should be a positive experience.
I found Furosemide made me incontinent. I couldn't reduce fluid intake because of my kidneys. Heart Failure Nurse said keep my legs up or moving. Don't think she was allowed to recommend getting an Orbitrek, but confirmed after I got it that was what she was suggesting. Using that when I'm at my desk has pretty much eliminated my fluid in the legs
You will find a list of meds that will cause swelling. Sometimes less, also affecting kidney functions, yours look like there functioning well, it's a good sign.
I took furosemide for years because of swollen ankles. No side effects except peeing quite a lot in the first few weeks but it eased off after about 3 weeks. I'd just say don't take it at bedtime or you'll be up half the night.
I was on them when 1st diagnosed with HF and had water retention, after a few years of improvement and being stable, was told to take on a as needed bases. They help to keep fluid off of your heart and lungs, but you also need to watch high sodium foods as well. You also have to be careful while on them as to not let yourself get dehydrated, which can cause lots of other problems with your body.
yes I take 80 mg and if needed I take an extra .40 mg at lunch time!
Hello I have swollen ankles and legs, and swollen tummy, been diagnosed with afib and lvsd and prescribed furosemide 4omg 2 weeks ago and gp said I would be running to the toilet but I have not noticed much difference in swelling and not any more looe visits, chest tightness is what I hoped it would sort out, glad to see others on higher doses as seeing my gp this week and was going to ask if it could be increased I know I am full of extra fluid it is so uncomfortable. Also interested to see another type of med option. Gp sending me for another echo as well so glad this thread was posted as I have been so worried by this as my dose wasn't working.
Yes. For years I was on it after two bouts of pulmonary edema. When I moved to a subtropical climate I stopped having to use it for years as the water retention went away. Then last year it got bad fast as I began having trouble with an aortic valve malfunction. I am back on it again. For a while I was on it every day but then it started to subside and I can often skip a day but I do not go without it for long as I do not want to go through that hell of being unable to breathe freely again.
There were times I had to go up to 60 mgs but that hasn't been recently. Before the valve replacement when my fluid retention was really bad they had me on 80mg IV push because I could barely breathe sitting up in bed. I expect I will be on it for the rest of my life but that is fine by me. My dad foolishly decided to stop taking it as he said he was tired of having to pee all the time. He paid for it with his life. Damn stupid choice to my mind.
