About diet
Hi Alexa. The Mediterranean diet is the one the BHF recommends. I try and stick to this as much as I can and find it to be very tasty. heartuk.org.uk/healthy-diet...
With respect to eating fruit - 5 a day should be fine but fruit juice should be limited. My sugar levels were going up so Iāve restricted my fruit consumption. bhf.org.uk/informationsuppo...
Hope that helps.
Fruit contains quite high levels of sugar, especially tropical fruit (and dried fruit contains absolutely insane levels of sugar!).
I've heard the "five a day" advice expressed as "4+1 a day", ie four portions of vegetables and one portion of fruit.
We're all different so I wouldn't be prescriptive about this, but purely for interest I have no fruit juice and no dried fruit. I'll usually have one portion of fruit (and never more than one portion of tropical fruit) but I'll also often have a portion of berries. However, if I'm out and about and need to buy prepared food then I'll stretch my rules and have an apple and a banana.
I fully endorse Steve's reply.
In addition I fully agree about fruit as many contain a lot of sugar (as fructose) and calories. I am diabetic so obviously wary of the sugar content. The mantra about fruit from WW and Slimming World puzzles me as many overweight and obese people are pre-diabetic. Carrots and cucumber wedges can be good alternatives.
Thank you all!He doesnt have diabet and also he is very fit,but i will try to give him less fruit..he is eating mostly apples.Thank you again!
Apples are good. A small scale study found 2 a day slightly lowers cholesterol. nhs.uk/news/food-and-diet/c...
Celery and hummus is a very pleasant snack, as are a small portion of nuts. Have a look at the glycaemic index , it makes for interesting reading and fits in well with Mediterranean diet. It is also worth trying to find a BANT registered nutritionist if you want more depth.
