Mediterranean Diet.

We are constantly advised to eat a Mediterranean Diet but a lot of fruit contains cyanogenic compounds, which turn into cyanide in the body or arsenic.

Following an internet search of the foods that I should eat and the Mediterranean Diet. I discovered that most of the food that is good for us contains small traces of cyanide (cyanogenic compounds) or arsenic. Broccoli, Cherries, Apricots, Peaches,Apples, plums, Pears, Almonds all contain cyanogenic compounds. Rice and Wine, contain Arsenic.

Cigarettes contain cyanide and arsenic. Red wine grapes have thicker skins and take up larger amounts of heavy metals than white grapes. Could those poisons in minute quantities protect the heart in some way? Just a thought from a layman. Could this also explain why the French have a lower rate of heart problems?

Anyone have any thoughts?

did not stop eating .

Obviously fruit contains sugar, so if that sugar isn’t exercised off, you will put weight on. The answer is, eat everything in moderation and keep moving.

I think the Mediterranean diet is the best one. However, I do think fruit consumption has to be kept sensible because of the sugar (fructose) content.

As regards the French I think lifestyle comes into it. They take time to enjoy their food. For instance they usually take a lunch hour and, not coffee and fast food at their desk. They also talk to each other when eating out with family and friends. It really annoys me to see people playing with their bl**dy phones in a restaurant. When we went out for my birthday it was phones on silent! On other tables were texting, photographing their food, etc. Why?

I always thought that the cyanide content in particular such as in apples was in the pips and not he fruit. The same in stone fruits like peaches. It would take an awful lot of apple pips to build up a noticeable amount.

The skin and flesh contain the arsenic. If you grow your own you can get soil testing kits. Some former industrial locations are quite contaminated.

Personally I think this is ludicrous but I'm sure you could take your theory, make an internet video, write a book on ' why everything you thought about fruit was wrong' and do nicely. Any dietary nonsense seems to sell to the gullible.

One fact that is accurate is that arsenic causes bladder cancer via smoking etc. Men have a 3:1 higher chance of contracting bladder cancer than women. My brother recently had it he was a smoker but gave up smoking 20 years previous. Therefore smoking, water or food containing trace elements of arsenic increases the likelihood of contracting bladder cancer and that is a fact.

I am not denying arsenic is thought to be associated with a rise in the incidence of bladder cancer.

In your original post you suggested that a Mediterranean diet was the issue.
