Coronary artery bypass graft.

I had a quad heart bypass on Christmas Eve 2019 at Basildon Hospital, Essex...writing this exactly 1 month after, feeling good after terrible back/shoulder pain for the first 3 weeks...now sleeping better. Saw the cardiac nurse today and she stressed that it is quite a journey back to total fitness so I'm going to the rehabilitation fitness classes in a couple of weeks. I am already doing short walks and did a mile earlier this week so I'm on the road to recovery.

Good for you!

I had a bypass operation at the end of 2018. The first few months weren't easy, but looking back I can genuinely say it was the best thing that ever happened to me. With the support of my wife I've turned my life style around and have lost weight and exercise far more. I feel ten or twenty years younger, and now squeeze far more enjoyment, fun, and vitality out of every day.

With your positive attitude you can look forward to exactly the same prospect.

Keep pressing forward and good luck!

Almost 4 years since my quad bypass. I ran a 10k race to celebrate the first year of leaving hospital. I ran a half marathon six months later. I run and swim regularly and my diet has changed beyond all recognition. Life is good :)

Good luck with the recovery and make the most of cardio rehab

Thanks Phil, at 73 years of age I think running half marathons is a little beyond me but walking one could well be my target...definitely going to do all the rehab.

Hi I had a quadruple eleven years next month.all I will say is get yourself fit and you will find the benefits I do a lot of walking as I don't like exercises all the best in your recovery.

Thanks for your reply...like you I prefer walking to set exercise routines so daily walks are definitely on the agenda.

Hi, hope this helps, I had my CABG at Basildon December 3rd 2008, when I came home after 6 days I rested lots and exercised as told, after 4 weeks depression started as I couldn't do what I was used to doing , but after 6 weeks and driving again and out walking more the depression went, after 8 weeks I was back working ( not Manual) for 3 days a week.

When you get referred for hospital rehabilitation classes please attend, also check with your doctor for local gyms that run Cardio Vascular classes and get on the courses, I attend 2 classes a week and Sunday mornings 1 hour freestyle in the gym, I am 76.and live in Colchester.

Thank you for your reply, I will certainly attend all the rehab classes and look into other classes...I'm not that far from you...in Clacton on Sea.

Hi,

I also had my CABG x 4 at Basildon Cardiac hospital in 2018. Like some others mine was unexpected, just an ache in my arm but I haven’t looked back. The care in the hospital was exemplary and the rehab team at the hospital were always giving encouragement and there to reassure you at anytime.

I also attend a group called Hearts and Minds locally on the 3rd Monday of each month in Laindon Community Centre a small distance from the hospital. Staff and doctors come along to give talks and answer questions.

I still find I have the odd questions ie:

Why is my ankle still numb where the vein was removed etc. and to have it explained to you is helpful.

The local gyms are also brilliant at further rehab classes too.

Good luck with your recovery.

Hi my triple bypass was 20 yrs ago at St Thomas,sLondon ,my ankle is still numb after all this time. Surgeon said it is where they tie the nerves off, after taking the vein, and not to worry.

I was 72 when I had my op and the first 3/4 weeks were difficult because of back & shoulder pain causing difficulties in sleeping...I thought it would never go away but it seemed to vanish almost overnight and after that no major problems and now fully fit & recovered...just hang in and all will be fine.

Good to hear that things are improving for you. I had a triple bypass last October and found the first few weeks at home pretty hard with the pain and difficulty sleeping. Over three months later, I have more or less completely changed my diet and am now halfway through my programme of cardiac rehabilitation classes. Overall I feel in a much better place. Good luck to you, I hope things continue to go well.

Thanks for your reply, like you say, the first 3/4 weeks were the hardest for me and then it improved almost overnight...in fact just had my first 8 hour sleep since the op.

Hi there lovely to hear you're progress, keep positive and enjoy your walking.

I had double bypass at Basildon hospital 2years and nearly 5months ago, 31st August 2017.

I also live in Clacton-On-Sea, wonderful to be able to stroll along the promenade without any traffic pollution.

Keep smiling and enjoying life.

Sending you hugs 🤗
