Creatine

Hi Everyone

Not sure if this is the right place to post this? but here goes.

I've got heart disease and micro vascular angina as some on here will know.

I've had the odd chance when not in pain to get to the gym. What I would like to know is this.Would creatine be safe to use with the angina?I know it's the most researched product out there regarding muscle repair etc and have been told by many people who use it that have heart disease that's it's harmless because it's natural and won't cause any issues.

So that's OK

My thinking is would that be the same outlook when using it if I also have angina. Its not a stimulant so therefore I can't see it causing an issue.Almost everyone uses it for muscle growth and since I've lost so much muscle from Weight loss I felt it would help

Your thoughts please.

That's a question for your medical team who know your medical condition.

Hi Rob, I just had a look at the Mayo clinic website and they reckon that in some cases high doses of creatine can cause kidney damage.

This may not happen but like you, I suffer from heart disease and don't want to risk damage to my kidney as well.

As previously stated, it is something to discuss with your doctor who knows your medical history but personally I wouldn't take it.

I agree with this comment. Sadly like me your condition is different now to how it was then before so everything must be very carefully examined before being taken. Some people even have problem with spicy foods that they didn’t have before let alone creatinine . Please take it easy until you’re sure

Hi Rob

My statins were stopped due to high Creatine Levels and my current Blood Tests check Creatine for Kidney Function Problems whilst I m on Entresto.

It is very difficult to rebuild lost Muscle a lot depends on Age. Lezzers gave you good advice to talk to your medical team for guidance. I wouldn't take advice from anyone down the Gym !!

Regards

Thank you everyone

I didn't take advice from people at the gym,it was a fair few people who actually have heart disease and take it and with no issues at all because it's the most researched supplement ever and is apparently harmless to the body. But I think your right I will do more research. I actually had a creatine test done last week and must pick up the results. That was due to the muscle and cramps I'm getting all over my body.

Kidney issues aside, one of creatine's benefits is that it helps you push further for longer. I'm all for that with a healthy, strong heart. But if you're here, that's probably not the case. So can't say I recommend taking something that's going to take you to a level your body (and heart) probably shouldn't be going to (yet). Don't forget: your heart is a muscle, but if damaged needs time to recover properly.

I am 64 and have mild CAD, apart from that I am quite fit and go to the gym 3 times per week....I also take creatine. It's a difficult one because everyone is different. Creatine can be useful for muscle growth but it's not wonder dust...get your bloods done first and eat a healthy low fat, high protein diet which is key to feeling better. There are some informative videos on youtube about creatine but take your time and speak to your doctor first....good luck.

Cheers Mgs33

my partner competes and has been in the fitness industry at a high level right from being a GB swimmer at a young age right through to her late 40s she's done so much research and says that she believes it's safe even for me.No she's not a heart specialist before anyone says anything, but it's the most researched supplement if you want to call it that?I know of many people who have heart disease who take it with no ill affects at 5gm daily

I strongly believe statins are and have caused me harm so I'm trying to do things to help me in some way

I've lost 7lbs of muscle and want to help put some back on

I already eat enough protein and all good fats so I just need that tweak so to speak

I can't visit the gym as much as I would like these days because of this blasted microvascular angina

And it's because of that condition I'm particularly thinking about and not so much the heart disease.

But thank you everyone for you kind advice.

Microvascular angina is still a type of heart disease that can lead to a lack of blood supply to your heart muscle.

I suggest you discuss taking Creatine with your Cardiologist.

I got my creatine level done because of the statins and they came back normal. Whatever normal is? these days

That may have been creatine kinase which is a marker of muscle damage: often a test used to check whether symptoms are due to statins.

There has been a study of creatine supplements with exercise in patients with heart disease and also patients with heart failure. Results were no better than with exercise alone. Check with your cardiolgist.

What study was that?

So your saying there was no diffence in taking the creatine

Yes. It didn't give any benefit over exercise alone.

If you are eating high protein and a healthy diet then probabaly don't need any creatine. Too much hype about it unless very elite performance

Why do you need more muscle, are you a bouncer or something.Just get as fit as you possibly can. Also your clothes will fit you better.

In answer to your message

No I'm not a bouncer as you put it 😂😃Doorman is the word I think you meant.

I'm not doing this for cosmetic purposes but because when I lost my weight I lost a fair bit of muscle that is now very hard to put back on.Its known to be very difficult to put muscle mass back on in your 50s

So I'm just trying to regain what I had simplest....

And I feel fine and look just fabulous in my clothes now thank you 😆😆

I have just started to use creatine to try and put a bit of weight back on i have been reading a lot and can't find any problem with it, when people say ask your gp they don't know anything about supplements ,a while ago I had a gp appointment and asked him if it's ok to take this and that he didn't know, but just take them as directed.
