To be on the safe side I would seek further advice from your GP. Are you on any diuretics to help with this?

Thank you shopman,no prescribed diuretics.Have tried over the counter ones in the past, they don`t work. Will take your advice and see GP as I can hardly get my shoes on today!

I would suggest ring and ask for a home visit if an appointment is not immediately available or you could ring 111 and they may be able to get you an appointment at a Walk In or Urgent Care Centre. I would also ask someone to go with you if your mobility is compromised.

I gained 9kg after my bypass due to an electrolyte imbalance. Along with addressing the problem I was put on a diuretic (Furosemide) temporarily.

I am glad to see you are going to see your GP. If fluid goes on the lungs this can cause serious problems.

I think fluid build up is very under rated in some quarters and can be a devil to get rid of. Have suffered from this for quite some time now but fortunately the Furosemide sorts me out. As a routine dose I have 80mg per day increasing up to 240mg when needed. Just make sure you have regular blood tests to ensure you don't get too dehydrated or they cause Kidney problems.

The 9kg represented a 10% weight gain. Once I started Furosemide this started dropping quite quickly. Everything was normalised after about four weeks and the Furosemide stopped.

I had had them once before for odema caused by Amlodapine. Another CCI (calcium channel inhibitor), Diltiazem, did not cause this problem.

Hope you get yourself sorted out today. All the very best to your brother xxx

Like others, after my bypass I had gained almost a full stone. When I went to family doctors the day after discharge, I was sent for an Xray and found to have fluid on the lung also. After strong antibiotics and water tablets, all was well and weight returned to normal within a few weeks. It was quite worrying since the weight appeared to be on legs, ankles and waist, Best to go see the doctor and see what they say, but nothing that can't get sorted with guidance - good luck

Handel,I`m on Furosemide now.Should do the trick. So kind of you to mention my brother. He nearly died from perforated bowel and sepsis on New Years Day but he`s pulled through.Fortunately he`s not got heart issues and keeps himself fit.xxx

Good grief! The poor man.

My hubby was on Furosemide following his quad bypass in November 2018. Couldn't really go anywhere for the day as he needed to pee every 5 minutes! Our GP took him off the tablets after 4 weeks. By that time, his 'water weight' disappeared! Good luck and best wishes to you and your brother xxx

Pleased to hear it, you get used to it and if you go out only go where there is a loo. If I have to take an increased dose then I treat it as a game of University Challenge - a starter for 10.

So you got into the GP who took one look and said 'Here's a prescription for Furosemide' - stay close to the convenience:)

Please update how you get on. As diuretics go, that one is gold-medal (but you do need to know where all the conveniences are!).

ETA: let us know how your brother is doing as well - you've had quite the start to the NY, both of you, yikes!

Please see your gp my feet started sweating last April and I thought they was just swollen but a couple of my friends kept saying phone a ambulance so I did they walked in my flat and the 1st thing they said was we know what's wrong with you you have got heart failure and they was right and I had never even heard of it

Don't delay, cowparsley, get that fluid off as soon as possible. Stress to your GP how urgent this is - if you are seeing signs yourself, then it is fairly serious already. All the very best.

I am just recovering from pneumonia and my experience echoes yours. Do you take Furosemide? I do and have done for many years and when the fluid build up is apparent, I increase (temporarily) the dosage; lots more trips to the loo but it's worth it. But whatever else you do, you should see your GP immediately.

hi, I would say you need to go to the GP for some diuretics, especially has you have had chest infection also. Always better to check it out.

Take care

Glad to hear you've been to GP, hopefully you'll be sorted in no time and back to your usual svelte self ☺

So sorry to hear your brother has been so poorly, my sister was very poorly & was in hospital a couple of weeks before Christmas with pneumonia. Since then she's has ongoing liver problems & yesterday she was told she still has pneumonia. I saw her on Monday & she does look poorly, it's horrible to see isn't it. Glad to hear your brother is doing better xx
