Mind and brain function

Hi my mother had replacement aortic valve surgery in August and is still having mind and brain function issues, including confusion and mood swings is this common?

How old is she? Anaesthesia in older people i think can cause problems.

Not so senior then. I read something a long time ago about possibility of anaesthetic causing foggy brain in older patients. I’m a Reflexologist, treatment for the body through feet. You could massage her feet with some cream ‘gently’ I’m prove circulation.

Hi Will26 I had an aortic valve replaced plus by pass in August 2016 I am now 72, I haven’t had any of the issues your Mother is having. Mood swings can be quite normal after major surgery but maybe speaking to her cardiac nurse or GP, about her confusion is the way to go, even after 3 years I sometimes get a shock thinking what happened to me! I really wish your Mum the very best.

Sorry to butt in! I had aortic valve replaced two years back, TAVI procedure as I was considered too ill for open heart. Yes indeed I still feel shock at what happened, esp. as I hadn't felt ill!!

Hi foxglove know what you mean, I went to the GP feet swollen thought I might get some water tablets left the surgery in the back of an ambulance! I had open heart surgery, sometimes see the scar and those feelings kick in. But the overriding feeling is gratitude to all the wonderful people in the NHS. Without whom I wouldn’t be here! Hope your keeping fit and well.

Thanks for reply - I was admitted to hosp. A&E thinking i only needed a gasp of oxygen and all would be sorted. I have appt. cardiac OP in Feb. (after 18 months last visit) I thought they had forgotten about me or were leaving be!!!....I'm a bundle of nerves already although as far as I know heart ok Past memories come flooding back

Know what you mean, I have echocardiogram every year and those weeks leading up! Awful.

I am sure you will be fine let me know how you go will be wondering.
