What Are You Eating Today?

Thought it would be interesting to see what people eat today.

I started with scrambled egg with smoked salmon and a slice of wholemeal toast. Washed down with a Bucks Fizz. Will get a filter coffee about 10:00.

So what are you eating?

Breakfast was our usual gluten-free low-salt porridge, toast, and fruit (orange slices in honour of the day).

Nibbles all day - mostly fruits and veg but a few cheese and gluten-free low-salt crackers, home-baked gluten-free low-salt oatmeal raisin cookies, spritzer biscuits, 'Snickerdoodles', 'Thumb-Prints', and a Yule Log I practised making ALL year to achieve baking and filling and icing.

Trust me baking gluten-free low-salt is NOT for the faint-hearted, especially a Yule Log as gluten-free means rolling without breaking or crumbling is not easy. Getting it to taste as good as it looks is even more difficult! Me in the kitchen 'Hmm. Ok, more g-f flour...oh dear, it's so dry! Right, more chocolate...ack, it tastes dusty! Right, a bit more liquid...', sheesh, it took me months to get the recipe right - I think, the taste test from the coeliac comes just after The Queen's Christmas Message. G-f l-s biscuits and dinner rolls are easy, basic sponge also. But a Yule Log, not.

Christmas Lunch will be a 4kg (for the leftovers!) locally reared chicken, gluten-free low-salt stuffing, mashed potatoes (and for me, plenty of soured cream as it is low-salt, please do not tell me about the fat content because it is Christmas!), and Scottish Sprouts (hahahaha - who saw Morrisons is now 'grown at' labelling sprouts as where the veg was grown rather than the 'traditional' name, hahahahaha!).

Bonus: the sprouts being locally grown will not have to be boiled down to green mush to avoid Continental grown Listeria contamination:)

Desert (or pudding) is a gluten-free low-salt home-baked Christmas Pudding shaped chocolate cake iced with marzipan under the fondant in Christmas Pudding colours, and lemon sponge iced with an almond flavoured glaze.

Hmmm. Sounds a lot of food - but I use up all the leftovers so no waste.

Started with a cup of tea and a small bowl of Shreddies. Going to youngest daughter’s for lunch but expect the usual turkey and all the trimmings. I will be having a quarter of a portion which is more than enough for me. I’ve been told there will be no Christmas pudding so I’ve bought a small one for later in the week. I’ve made Yorkshire pudding batter to drop off at my other daughter’s so it’s going to be a lovely day. Enjoy everyone xx

Very similar start with avacado, eggs & smoked salmon 😋 no alcohol for me by choice. Turkey roast last and just a couple of choccie treats i hope. Aren’t we all fortunate to enjoy such feasts. I count my blessings.

At a local hotel:

1. Salmon canapes

2. Starter

3. Fish course

4. Turkey and all the trimmings

5. Dessert

6. Cheese board

7. Coffee and mince pies

We are only having 4. and 5., a short walk and coffee when we get back...

After referring to the notes taken during rehab - pretty much the opposite. Moderation in everything - including moderation........

Started with jumbo oats, low fat yoghurt, chopped walnuts and half chopped bananas, to cushion my poor stomach against the bucket of medication I take. (My normal breakfast now, and with a bit of honey it's delicious!) After a bit, we had a cooked breakfast of baked beans, mushrooms, poached egg and fried halloumi (the somewhat unhealthy bit!). Much later we'll be having broccoli and cauliflower au gratin, quorn sausages, kale, mashed potatoes. No pudding or xmas cake, but plenty of fruit available. Plus some alcohol, hopefully. Remarkably modest this year!

We had different Christmas dinner today. Indian Takeaway! I had king Prawn Dopiaza and saag bhaji - no rice as I wouldn't be able to eat that much. Made a nice change it was lovely!! Boxing Day will have roast beef (can't abide turkey) with baked sprouts and various other veg -no potatoes as I can't stand them either. Will have 2 yorkshire puds though. No pudding or chocolates as don't have a sweet tooth. Won't need anything for tea after that lot!

Started off with healthy beans on toast then all the delicious forbidden foods. I especially enjoyed a Lancashire cheese sandwich. Also, homemade Christmas pud. with cream and a few glasses of fizz among all the other traditional foods. Boxing Day now so back to my Mediterranean diet.

No one I know eats smoked salmon because of the marine fleas Infestation, does that apply only to farmed Salmon Michael do you know, I do enjoy it but a little wary.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply toTudee

It applies to all salmon but the infestation is worse in farmed salmon as are infections in most intensely reared livestock. They are stated to be harmless to humans.

As it is an occasional treat we prefer the "wild" variant as it has a leaner firmer texture.

I had the most beautiful "Michelin " starred Xmas dinner at my nieces. Turkey and all the trimmings followed by Xmas pudding and custard.

I normally have a very small appetite so had a break between dinner and pud! And being with family just made it all the more special. Merry Xmas to you all x

We had our annual sprout eating contest yesterday. As usual I lost struggling to hit 3. My great-nephew struggled to 5 as he wanted to beat me and is 5. Others got into the 20's but my niece hit 30 before that ran out! I blame the "Vicar of Dibley" for all this nonsense!

We've solved the brussel sprouts situation.

Cut them in half , par boil, fry with bacon lardons and a little butter.....

I wouldn't like to consider the effect of 30 Brussels sprouts on the inner workings of the digestive system. I would vacate the room ASAP

Sounds good . Less trouble than shreddi ng them before stirfrying. Actually the smaller ones now available are not so poisonous tasting as they used to be.

Or a new addition from the BBC - And three Chefs (Rick, Gordon and Jamie) came from the Manchester Studios bearing gifts of Turkey, Pig-in-blankets and Sprouts! 😁

I don't understand this obsession with sprouts at Christmas. It is as if the Wise Men brought Gold, Frankincense and Sprouts! :(

Porridge with a swirl of cream for breakfast.. Then off to deliver presents to sons family en- route to daughters for lunch.

Mixed seafood starter - local smoked salmon (hot and cold smoked) smoked mackerel and prawns, salad and homemade Marie-rose sauce. Locally reared roast turkey, pigs-in-blankets, stuffing balls, skirlie (oatmeal, onion and suet stuffing) roasted carrot, parsnip, butternut squash and onion, roast tatties and gravy. Oh and sprouts which I love and the one who should eat them can’t stand! Delicious!

Desert followed about 2 hours later - homemade cheesecake, raspberry pavlova or strawberry ‘jelly fluff’

Didn’t need anything else except a cup of tea and bed!

Normal Christmas lunch, turkey of course. I wish we could buy full turkeys all year round. LAter one turkey sandwich and a small slice of Christmas cake ( made by me). I was too exhausted after cooling the lunch to want to eat it. Scared myself.

This post has popped into my mail box a few minutes ago, so, for what it's worth I had muesli, fruit, yoghurt,, full Christmas dinner, a walk, then home and ate half a box of chocolates, today I have eaten the other half of the box of chocolates, I am thankful that they have gone.

Staying with my daughter and family, so only just caught up with all the messages. So my contribution, Christmas Day menu- Full turkey spread, with lots of veg, and Christmas pud and brandy butter after !

Lots of silly games in the evening but had to watch Gavin and Stacey!

Today all the pickings of leftovers, pickles, fresh fruit salad, Christmas cake, and feel eaten far too much, but it’s only once a year!

I can’t exercise it off as I’m waiting for treatment of a torn Achilles’ tendon!

Can’t believe I’ve to face another op so soon after my ohs 5 months ago.

It’s 3 months since the event, urgent treatment centre said not Achilles, been with physios since, who got specialist lower limb person to see me, who sent me at long last last Friday for an ultra sound. Reported on immediately, result as above. So since Sept 17th I’ve been hobbling around.

Can’t tell you how fed up I am about it, and I know I’ve written about it on here before. Think I just need to moan again, sorry!

I asked if there was a way forward without surgery, and was told only if I wanted to hobble around for the rest of my life!,

Apparently according to the cardiac rehab nurse, the side effect of the antibiotic I was on for a lower wound infection, has the risk of tendon tears!

So there I a am, but do have a mended heart, so shouldn’t moan too much!

Rosei profile image
Rosei in reply tomarigoldb

My friend who I play bridge with tore her Achiles tendon, after a few months she was told she needed an operation, which included a tendon transplant other wise she would hobble about, she has chosen to hobble about, having had a hip replacement and a knee replacement, she says enough is enough.

marigoldb profile image
marigoldb in reply toRosei

Thank you Rosei for replying. No I don’t think I could go on hobbling like I am now. Although I have recently gone through open heart surgery, and believe it or not, previous 4 years , R and L hip replacements and laminectomy 4/5 one year and2/3 another year that has been an op every year. Osteoarthritis certainly does it’s damage!

Anyway I’ll wait and see what the orthopaedic surgeon says when he’s seen the ultrasound.

I am a widow, living on my own, so really feel for my daughter and son who take up most of the supporting for me, and they have their own families. I really thought 2020 was going to be op free!

Still as I’ve said before I do have a mended heart!! and I’m just so grateful for that!

Best wishes for 2020 everyone.

Far far too much Michael, hope you had a lovely day. Porridge for breakfast then it was turkey lunch with all the trimmings, followed by home made Christmas pudding with cream. Supper later on was a sausage roll and piece of Christmas cake. Boxing day was baked gammon with bubble and squeak. Then more Christmas pudding. Today will be left over turkey with potatoes and then probably more Christmas pudding! All was washed down with some fizz on Christmas day, had no alcohol since. Happy New Year x

I enjoyed reading this thread; it was fascinating seeing all the different ways of celebrating. I particularly liked the idea of an indian takeaway!

I am just back from a lovely week with family - 10 adults, 4 children, 6 nationalities and 4 languages: oysters, beef, crème caramel, lots of wine ( we all watched that German Christmas staple 'Dinner for one'), and probably my entire cheese ration for the year.

Fortunately my view is that it doesn't matter what you eat occasionally, but what you eat most of the time. Now back to vegetable soup.
