Hi everyone my husband takes warfarin & we are going to my daughters for Xmas we are stuck on a starter for him & don't want him to feel excluded ( he doesn't like fish shell fish or mushrooms) he also needs to be careful of sodium & not too much protein as only has one kidney so we tend to make things from scratch rather than pre packaged ......any advice or favourite recipes /ideas would be greatly appreciated thank you

Sorry, Spetses, but I’m not much of a cook! A decent health website will give you lots of ideas, I’m sure. I have been taking Warfarin for 37 years and enjoy a varied diet, avoiding foods which contain natural anticoagulants such as grapefruit and cranberries. I do drink alcohol but monitor my intake quite closely.

I hope this is of help.

Have you thought of a vegetarian starter something like veg done in filo pastry low protein but not sure about the fat content.

I’m not a vegetarian and not keen on fish.

I’ve been on warfarin for a number of years now and also feel that one so called naughty starter one day of the year isn’t going to do that much harm.

But do remember that’s my own personal opinion we are all different.

Most soups, mousses, If google 'healthy starters for a dinner party' you will get some interesting suggestions?

Asparagus and poached egg; avocado with spinach; melon and raspberry - all great starters, super easy and healthy.

Apart from grapefruit, cranberry and binging on brussel sprouts I would relax and crucially, not monitor your INR if you home test. Your body has some great self correcting mechanisms. Also, a few weeks higher than 3 is going to do no harm.
