Activity insurance which covers cardiac pre existing medical condition abroad.

Hi,

I had my first heart attack 2003 and query another 2016 although this time bad angina for which I take my trusty spray. I am 72. I count myself lucky in that most years I continue with activities abroad such as mountain walking, snowshoeing, sea kayaking. However my insurance cover does NOT cover me for cardiac issues whatsoever. I continued with them through idleness really and hoping I would not have a problem. I usually go with a tour company and the first thing they want are insurance details although obviously I dont stress that cardiac is not covered. Anyway I have decided that I really do need cardiac cover whilst undergoing above activities and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good insurance firm that might be suitable please.

Many thanks for your help.

All the best, Frank.

Hi einhorn

Try Staysure, they are specialists at travel insurance for people over 50 with health conditions.

Try moneysupermarket.com or comparethemarket.com.

They can both compare a range of companies for pre-existing medical conditions cover. The difference in premiums between different companies can be massive.

I recently had to do last minute travel insurance for beloved & I , as company that I normally used had changed their criteria.... I spent ages doing individual comparisons, covering all medical conditions, using recommended providers for quotes, then I did a Compare the Market search & Saga came up with a great deal , beloved is 83 with cardiac issue etc & I’m 67, with more the one long term condition . It’s time consuming, but reassuring to get good cover, they all varied SO much .

In my (limited) experience, none of the activities you list are considered extreme or high risk in actuarial terms. Staysure has provided me with insurance before and after Aortic Valve Replacement, with hypertension and coronary artery disease related risks covered at a reasonable premium. I've cycled, snowboarded and windsurfed as well as alpine trekking and tennis with reasonably priced cover, albeit with a slight increase in premium for snow sports (off-piste excluded)

However, high healthcare costs in the US and certain other countries dictate higher premiums.

I would be reluctant not to have cardiac cover as its potentially very costly should your require hospitalization whilst on holiday. And repatriation costs can be astronomical.

Many thanks for all your helpful replies. In the process of contacting insurance companies but Allclear and Staysure useless. If you are over 70 or even 65 with one of them and do such reckless things as cross country skiing and snowshoeing not interested!! Still waiting to hear from the other company on the BHF website. However Saga on the face of it have sort of come up trumps but can only fill in application form when next trip date is less than 30 days ahead. Will let you know how I get on. Cheers, Frank.
