Hi all what I can’t get my head around consultant wants me to gradually get up to 10 mg bisoprol daily to stop ectopic s but the ectopic s make my HR low. On 1.25 for 3 weeks now and my HR is 47 consistent how can he think I could possibly tolerate 10 daily. He has put my GP to monitor and said my HR must not go under 40 BPM I know cardiologists are God’s but

My Lady had a HA 12 months ago, and she also had stents put in. She was put on a low dose of Bisopol to start and now she is on 10m each side of the day. For a week or two she was very sluggish and very tiered but now she is fine and coping very well.Give your Body time to accept the Dose and you will be fine. Best Wishes to you.

Hi just excessive topics which is causing very low HR also fluttering and sometimes aware of my heart beating no other problems at all But the consultant wants to find out what’s caused them he thinks it was the awful virus I had last winter (coughing) Take care xxx

I don’t think you have anything to be worried about I have 21 % which the consultant described has excessive when I was having my heart scan the technician said the ectopic s are every other one. The lovely consultant I saw told me they are benign but we need to get rid of them because they are causing low H R ,fluttering and sometimes aware of my heart beating.I don’t see him again for 3 months so it’s not treated urgent . Take carexxx

Hi Christina

I was told by Arrhythmia Nurse that it is difficult to obtain an accurate HR when your having a run of ectopic beats.

I was put on 10mg of Bisoprolol by an Intervention Cardiologist, but after having Pauses for around 3 seconds the Heart Failure Cardiologist wrote to both my GP and Intervention Cardio to say in his opinion I was over Beta Blocked !! HR was down to low 30s and slightly lower whilst sleeping. 2 X 24 hour Holter Monitors showed how low it was going. Now I am on 7,5mg Bisoprolol with HR around low 40s. I don't feel the ectopic beats so much on the 7.5 mg but they are still there !! in Bigeminy and Trigeminy form and occasionally an ectopic every other beat. If it helps I have been assured they are not going to kill me. At the very worst I was in Coronary Care for 24 hours for constant monitoring and Cardiologist changed medication. Stopped Furosemide 40mg, and Isosorbide Mononitrate and started me on Entresto which has been raised to middle dose with a view to going to maximum when BP and HR has stabilised. BP is sometimes Low 90/55 and then maybe 115/65 HR currently 45 ish .

I do have other Heart Issues like Heart Failure EF low to Mid 40s and I have a 100% blocked Right Coronary Artery . My Left Anterior Artery was by passed but it required further intervention with stents.

I am lucky in that I can manage the side effects of my Medication When I am Tired I put it down to my Heart Failure rather than concentrating on it may be the Beta Blocker or the Entresto as I believe they are the two meds that will do me the most good !

I apologise for this being so long winded but I think it is important that we all understand we may have different conditions but are being treated with the same Medication, if that makes any sense. Wish you well and best Regards

Beta blockers will reduce the rate and pumping power of the heart, and I think the theory is that they will a. reduce the heart's pumping power and hence the intensity of ectopics and b. reduce the electrical activity leading to ectopic beat formation. I have never found they did anything of the sort. My best discovery was that Ranitidine cut down the gastric problems I had which were causing the ectopics. Do you have gastric problems? Check Dr Sanjay Gupta's Youtube video on the heart-gut connection. In my case it's not a total solution and whilst there is a clear guts>>heart causation, there is also a heart>>guts link, as they both share the same nerve feed, the vagus. Irritability of either affects the other.

Sorry forgot to ask has the consultant mentioned ablation to you

Cliff_G profile image

Yes, I had an ablation 15 years ago which was successful in stopping the AF but I still get ectopics. The ranitidine has quelled 99+% of the ectopics but I'm also on amiodarone (and starting to come off it)

That’s very interesting because every so often I get the most awful indigestion can last 24 hours I take lansoprazole to get rid of it the pain is dreadful. The consultant knows this but didn’t connect it he thought my heart had been damaged by a virus ( coughing) because that’s what I went to the GP for when they found my pulse was 40 when norm for me was65 Take care xxx

Hi Christina

I should of added I do take a 75mg Aspirin and Eplerenone 25mg my Statin is Pravastatin 10mg . Cliff G s comment on Gastric problems is overcome by Omeprazole 20mg !!!

ps in my case Ablation has been mentioned but no future date for EP study. My consultant thinks it's to soon for a Pacemaker as my pacing is reasonable, but it hasn't be discounted as my QRS gap is widening . Apart from Heart problems I am in good Health and my Heart problems don't stop me doing more or less what I want to do, bearing in mind born 47 makes me 72 LOL

Best Regards
