Hi I've got a s icd fitted for heart failure n cardiomyopathy had it nearly 3 yrs no probs
Hi I don't know what BS is but had cardiac arrest 1 year ago, had no previous symptoms. ICD fitted 3 weeks later. It is quite a shock but you do get used to it , you have to look at the good in things and hopefully you have the support of a close family. Try and live as normal a life as possible , do the things you are capable of , don't give up and enjoy your life - good luck
Hi.
Welcome to the forum. It is very early days for you and having been through the trauma of a cardiac arrest and then an implant you must feel very fragile at present.
In December 2017 my partner had two cardiac arrests, fortunately like you, he survived. He was diagnosed with a condition similar to yours called - long QT syndrome. After several days in intensive care and three weeks in the cardiology unit he had an S-ICD implanted. We are now 20 months on from that, and life has returned to normal for us. We travel extensively and enjoy life to the full. Airport security is a simple process now.
Since the implant he has had no further arrests and the device monitoring, which he does weekly, is all normal.
Once the wound has fully healed try to get back to living life as you did before. What you now have is peace of mind that should you have another cardiac event the S-ICD is there to deliver the treatment rather than you having to wait for other people to get you help. Your very own paramedic.
If you are a car driver remember you must tell the DVLA. If our experience is anything to go by it took 11 months to get my partners licence back after it was revoked. They say the minimum period after a cardiac arrest and a defibrillator implant is 6 months no driving. For HGV drivers they revoke the licence for life.
There may be a support group locally, which you may find helpful to attend. There you can met up with other people who have cardiac implants. You cardiology department would give you information if there is a group.
If we can help in anyway drop us a message.
With warmest regards Ron.
Hello! I'm just now seeing this, and others have explained beautifully of there experiences, so I will just add the following: I've had 2 ICD'S so far, the first @ 46, and you soon forget it's there, but it's reassuring to have it and relieves a lot of the worry. Also for women, best advice I can give that no one told me - wear a soft, comfortable bra, 24 hrs a day, while you're healing, especially while sleeping, and sleep with a soft but supportive side pillow! Before you know it you'll be all healed & won't need those extra "supports", at least 24/7 that is.
Best wishes to you and please keep us posted! 😀
