I found a local chippy that cooks in sunflower oil and so have fish and chips once every few weeks but don;t eat much/any of the batter. I feel very guilty but my cholesterol continues to stay below 4 - you can have vinegar but no salt! Enjoy!!

I agree I'm not fond of fish & chips as I don't like batter but really it's just there to steam the fish. I always love the smell then can't eat them. We buy lightly dusted Plaice, Pollock and Basa which most supermarkets including Aldi sell in the freezer section, oven chips are better than fried or make wedges, spray or sprinkle a little oil and season with pepper or chilli, they're delicious done in the oven. I don't think to have fish & chips once a month would make a huge dent in your diet

I agree fish & chips smell nicer than they taste!! Bit too greasy for me unfortunately. definately prefer home made.

Yep, salmon is really nice. Could also make home made chips, spray them with extra virgin olive oil 1 cal spray & cook in the oven, very tasty and healthy.

You don't need any oil on them if you are cooking them in the oven.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to jimmyq

How do you get them to have a bit of colour without oil? Mine always look anemic.

jimmyq profile image
jimmyq in reply to Lezzers

Cook them longer.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to jimmyq

Thank you. I've tried that but took too long. I'll stick with the spray.

Some plaices do a vegan/vegetarian version where the fish is tofu wrapped in seaweed before being coated in batter (egg free) and fried.

Glasgowgirl1947 profile image
Glasgowgirl1947 in reply to MichaelJH

This isn't fish & chips though is it?

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Glasgowgirl1947

I know - it is what I saw advertised somewhere. This tofu version is more like a variant of Mars Bar in Batter! ☹️

Glasgowgirl1947 profile image
Glasgowgirl1947 in reply to MichaelJH

OMG I don't think they would be anything like a battered Mars bar although I've never tasted one despite my origins.

🤮that sounds disgusting Michaeljh. Plaices? 😂

Lezzers profile image

I'm a glad you said that, I wanted to say it but didnt dare!! Do you think plaice is deliberate!! ☺

MichaelJH profile image

Indeed - pun intended. I have seen a chippy called "Golden Plaice"!

MichaelJH profile image

I imagine it is - I cannot stomach tofu!

Wild Salmon GS?? I just think of that in a Tin lol.....!

Me too. You can't beat a Fish Finger Sandwich 😊

I keep buying it to try but can’t bring myself to cook it. I do not like fish but I eat baked cod from time to time to try to eat healthy. I sprinkle fresh rye breadcrumbs mixed with pepper and a small amount of grated Parmesan to mask the taste of the fish. It’s lovely. I cook chips in the actifry.

Yummy mackerel, haddock, kippers, salmon, sea bass, you must try them sometime!! You’ve really got to get over your phobia about fish....jaws did not really happen 🦈 honest!

I think occasionally would be fine. What is your ldl cholesterol level. Like another person said why not make your own

Go for it as long as it`s only once a month and doesn`t awake a ravenous beast in you.No backsliding after you`ve enjoyed your treat!

benjijen profile image
benjijen

Eat it and enjoy it! It's once a month. You're eating 'healthily' for the rest of the time, just make sure you don't slide back into old ways!

Everything in moderation! It’s sugar that does the damage not fats. Fish is very healthy, maybe just don’t eat all of the batter!

We have a piece of fish each and share a portion of chips.

Enjoy!!

Prada47 profile image

Snap that's what we do, share a potion of chips my other half has a Fish I have a Steak Pie which is my treat because I prefer Pie to Fish !!

Balls, just do it. In the last couple of weeks my heart rate has risen by about 5-10 BPM, my sciatica is playing up, I constantly sweat & due to all of this my heart anxiety is up. At some point during all of this you just have to say balls & just enjoy something. So I had a lunchtime chippy yesterday with mushy peas & when ask ‘salt & vinegar’, I said a resounding ‘yes’.

It either that or I going back to 20 fags a day, because I’ll take the tablets & live most of my life like a monk, but I need something for me, so the odd naughty meal is going to stay. As my consultant told me ‘Don’t get too obsessed with the diet etc, just stop smoking, as it took over 40 years to block your arteries, it could take another 40 years to block them again’. A bit basic, but fair enough I thought.

Brilliant reply!! 😊😊

I think it's fine to have now and then I think everything in moderation . Follow an heathy diet . I don't eat the batter but that's just me.

After all life is full of risks ... A tree could fall on you an accident could take you out who knows ( hopefully none of those) enjoy the life you have and if fish and chips once a month makes you happy so be it. Xx

I don't make my own at home but whenever I spot a Harry Ramsden's I'm in there like a shot. The quality of the fish is brilliant, so much better than supermarkets. I don't eat the batter though and I limit the number of chips. The mushy peas are definitely the highlight.

The Happy Fryer in Holborn does as well. I visited occasionally on my way home when I was a commuter. Very old skool even down to the Formica tables. Amazing cross-section of people; cabbies, business people and the occasional celebrity but I never saw Elvis! 😁

Once a month is fine. It depends if once a month becomes one a fortnight once a week 2 times a week. We all know where that road goes. 😂😂

Not going to get that out of my head!!!

I bought an air fryer. I only use two dessert spoons of olive oil for two big portions. Chips take 45 minute to make but well worth the wait. Lovely with salmon. I have chips at least once a week.

Sillyfroggy profile image
Sillyfroggy in reply to mistymolly

I’m toying with buying an air fryer, Molly...how like ‘real chippies’ are they? We do the in the oven, couple of squirts of rapeseed spray currently and they’re yummy. I personally wouldn’t trust myself to have fish and chips once a month. I’d get away with it, then my greedy brain would say ‘twice a month won’t kill you’ and before I know it I’m whizzing on the slope! My takeaway treat is a grilled chicken breast kebab, with pitta and salad. Feels dirty enough to qualify as takeaway, but not cataclysmically bad. KFC... ahhh...I miss you. My husband asked whether I could have the breast fillets and remove the skin. THE ONLY POINT OF KFC IS THE SKIN!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂🙈🙈🙈

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to Sillyfroggy

I’d be interested as well. I thought about buying an air fryer but I’ve got a halogen oven (which is excellent for cooking skinned chicken) and we either do the chips in it or in the main oven.

Some chip shops here in my part of east Scotland have stopped using oil and have gone back to using dripping like they used to. Once in a blue moon I have fish and chips and thoroughly enjoy it. 😀

Air dryers are great for cutting down fat. I use an actifry. The chips are great. My grandchildren prefer these chips to any others. You only need one tablespoon of oil for a whole batch of chips. It’s also good for stir fries.

I have just ( half an hour ago) eaten my first fish and chips for 6 months. I should feel guilty but I don't, they were delicious!

Well thanks GS, lol. I had them, went down a Treat. Even had a Lolli after to wash it down with. My Cardiologist is great by the way but I always tell him the truth anyway so I think he's used to me by now ha ha!! 😊😊😊
