Statins and coffee and bananas
I drink coffee (ground not instant) eat bananas and take statins. Have done for years. And I am fine. Don't consult Dr Google and you will be be too.
best to follow a diet where you eat a variety of fruit and veg. Recent research seems to indicate that you should have thirty different veg and fruit in a week. This would include nuts, herbs etc.
If you aim for this, then you certainly wouldn’t be over consuming bananas. And perhaps just have a couple of caffeinated drinks is a day.
Not an issue on statins as long as they are consumed as part of a well balanced diet.Although bananas should be restricted on certain blood pressure medications like ACE inhibitors.
And you should consider reducing consumption of coffee , black tea and chocolate with a heart condition as too much isn't recommended.
Google etc. are confused about this.
I’m not a pharmacist but I would suggest moderate consumption of coffee and bananas is fine while on statins. I’ve not seen anything on the pamphlets listing warnings/side effects that says otherwise. Love coffee in the mornings. I only have 1-3 cups a day max though.
I have a coffee every day and banana when want
I have decaf coffee and tea and only ever eat one banana
Love my coffee and bananas, though not often together 😄, no probs whatsoever. The side effects of statins are very much overstated, it's unfortunately become "a thing" in the public mind. I generally have just one caffeinated coffee per day.
No, side effects of statins have not been overstated. Only a person who hasn't experienced the side effects of the various statins would make such a statement. And these are only the side effects that we know about by the way. Think on that for a minute or two 🤔
Have oats with banana almost daily and occasional coffee and several cips of tea daily. No isssues with 40mg atorvastatin.
I have been on statins for over 20 years. The only thing that I was told to avoid was grapefruit juice when I was on Simvastatin as it can increase the effect of the statin. Detailed advice on statins is here:
I am on 40 mg atorvastatin, have been for years. Usually have a banana on my porridge and 2 or 3 coffees a day. Never had a problem with that.
Hi. I have not heard about that at all and have been taking atorvastatin for years. The only thing i was told was not to eat or drink greyfruit juice.
I agree with the comments made above. I've spent (too) much time in the past two years researching suitable and unsuitable foods and supplements, and have come across nothing that advises against consuming caffeinated coffee and bananas while on statins, though there are a few people (not necessarily heart patients) who have suspicions about statins. I've been on them for years. At breakfast I have one caffeinated coffee out of a jar I keep for visitors, then I have two or three decaffs through the day and can't tell the difference from caff.
Bananas seem as safe a fruit as any, and I have one a day, finding it a useful food to take when walking. (I was a little miffed when I forgot to buy some on Tuesday's Big Shop.)
If your food intake consists exclusively of bananas and coffee that could be a problem! But both as acceptable, in moderation as part of a mixed diet including other fruit, veg an drinks
Bananas are one of the foods which are relatively high in potassium, so eating a large number of bananas regularly could upset your potassium levels which can be risky, more so if you are on some blood pressure regulating medications (not statins)
Everyone is advised to moderate their caffeine intake as caffeine is a stimulant - it also has other effects which are more important in other conditions, but there are no specific clashes with statins
Foods, drinks and other medications which must be avoided are listed in the information which come with any medication - that is the first place you should look for this sort of info - you should always read it when taking any medication for the first time, and check it occasionally if you take it long term as it can change when new evidence is found.
I take 80mg atorvastatin a day and I eat bananas and drink coffee , I have never been told not to .
