Women's health question

A question for ladies here, since contracting heart disease, treatment in hospital and then open heart surgery, I haven't had a period. It's been nearly 6 months now. I was having regular periods before, I'm 44 but had no signs of menopause. Has anyone had a similar experience, and if so, did your periods come back? In my case I'll be quite happy if they don't, I'm just curious, but apologies if this is an upsetting topic for anyone reading xx

Hi, not an upsetting topic at all and a reasonable question.

I was 59 having my op so much older but had gone 'through the change' in my late 40's. I had no noticeable symptoms either (lucky us) I do think the doctor can conduct a blood test to show if you are/have going through the change by testing your hormone levels.

Thanks, Heather, I'll ask my GP for a blood test. Glad to hear you had an easy menopause, I hope it's the same for me! X

You may be experiencing early/premature menopause, which can be bought on by a “shock” event (this can be either physically or emotionally). Because of your age, you’re GP would be able to do a blood test to check your hormone levels. But this will depend on what, if any, contraception you are using. Bear in mind that some women are lucky enough not to experience many of the symptoms (sadly for me and my partner I can almost check off every symptom 😉), but some of yours may have been masked by what’s been happening to your heart. However, the person who will be in the best position to answer your question will be your GP.

Thanks, Penfold, I didn't realise menopause could be brought on suddenly by this kind of event, and it was definitely a massive emotional shock as well as a physical one! I'm not using hormonal contraception so will ask my GP for a blood test. I'll feel lucky if this is sudden menopause, sorry to hear that you're suffering with the symptoms X

Not a problem... hope that the GP can provide you with some answers. Don’t feel sorry for me ... it’s my other half that deserves the sympathy !! 😂😂

I think there are two possibilities here: that the shock and upheaval has stopped your periods or the medication you are on has altered things (assuming you are on meds). They may return.I thought mine had stopped at 50 then over two years later I had another period.Got it checked..fast tracked actually..but was told I'd never had me pause and I still had an egg in one of my ovaries! No periods since though and I'm now 55.

Hi Azy, I think you accidentally posted as a reply to this thread, rather than starting your own thread, and so I'm just concerned that no one else will see your message - I've only seen it because I got a notification, because I started this thread. So if we keep chatting here, it's so unlikely anyone else will see it. I just want you to be able to get lots of supportive replies, not just from me! Xx
