Hi all for everyone keeps track my surgery admission didn't go to plan. I was second on the list but a lot of complications with the gent in for the first surgery and it ran for nearly 12 hours so absolute no chance mine was getting done. Home earlier today and OHS reschedule for a week on Tuesday (12th march) Now priority and first on list myself so barring any last minute emergencies everything should go to plan this time...

Like to say a massive thank you to everyone for their kind messages of support and help. Very much appreciated πŸ™‚πŸ’™β€οΈ

The heart journey continues x

Absolutely gutted but nothing you can do when someone is in surgery all that time. Never slept the previous night and was fasting from 6am so by the time it was cancelled at 4pm i was exhausted. Still can't believe I'm actually at home now and not in ICU bit thank you πŸ™‚ and keeping everything like you crossed it happens this time 🀞🀞🀞🀞

Sorry to hear your news Mark. When I finally went in I was first on the list for the next morning. Due to an emergency it was postponed overnight but this was not communicated as I could have had a light breakfast and a cuppa before six. I went down just after one dry as a bone. I then became a long job (over eight hours) and put the team into overtime. Just glad the patient before me went very smoothly.

Thanks Michael yeah I totally understand what you're saying I felt for my nurse as she was as in the dark all day as me. They did tell me the night before they anticipated it running over but not by that much. Didn't get a sleeping tablet the night before so a sleepless night worrying more about the fact it could be postponed rather than the actual surgery.

The guy in the room next to me was postponed as well bit go taken this morning but we had different surgeons

Been there, so know how you’re feeling, you gear yourself up for the op and then it doesn’t go ahead and you have to go through it all again. Fingers crossed for next time.

I had mine cancelled twice on the day I was due to go in, then third attempt I got a bed, showered and ready for op next morning and ..... cancelled again, might be that afternoon. Got to 4pm and was moved into a side ward, op might be next day. Lunchtime following day, op would be following week (4 days later) but I could go home or stay in hospital - I went home. Thankfully my op went ahead next time. Each cancellation was due to an emergency so it made it a bit easier, but didn’t make it any less stressful. Like you, I work, so each time I was mucking about my employers and my husband was mucking about his employers because he was having to change shifts to be able to see me each day and booking a week off to look after me when I got home.

Fingers crossed for you.

Spot on with the work thing not for me but my wife's the same with shift swaps and trying to work extra to build up annual leave. My work have been brilliant and no problems with time off and moved surgery dates. Went through the same late last year with the keyhole surgery as well.

Thanks again 😊 x

I think that's the thing booking off work, organising the family etc.

Takes a lot then when cancelled having 're do.

Glad it finally went ahead, shows how close to can come to getting surgery on the day..i.e. prepped and then not.

Bless you, this happened to us, my hubby was shaved and gowned and ready to go when cancelled for his urgent bypass and we had to stand on a computer train for two hours to get back home. Such a worrying time. Thankfully all went well the second time. I hope you get sorted soon x

Thank you πŸ™‚ yeah I was the same all ready to go but gown on etc. They let me stay another night as we're 2 hrs away from the hospital. Hopefully I'm the same and it's second time lucky 🀞 x

I’ve got to make that telephone call tomorrow afternoon, for surgery on Saturday, praying it’s on because I’m getting so weary and living by myself the days are so long and the garden so tempting!

Fingers crossed you get your surgery very soon.

Yeah it was but as the day went on it became clear I wasn't getting taken so was in that mindset. Hit me hard yesterday morning when I woke thinking I should have been in ICU and not packing to go home πŸ˜•

Thank you πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

So sorry to hear about your delay in surgery.

I was also bumped for surgery but only by 2 days and so disappointing as you try to prepare yourself for it.

On my day of admission I had got talking to another patient next to me who was also having the same surgery but she was a chronic asthmatic too.

I heard the surgeon say to her β€˜we have moved people today and we are putting you first’. Very insensitive as I was right next door. Obviously she needed it more than me but not handled well.

I have been asked to talk to the educators at my hospital in April about my heart surgery experience. All of it will be totally positive as my care was exceptional apart from that one thing, I think it could have been handled better.

Since then I have become friends with my lovely neighbour and we have got comfort from our shared experience.

The date will wizz round, wishing you all good thoughts at this time.

So annoying! I was also β€œbumped” but am now really pleased I was. My op went brilliantly and here I am, 4 months later, fitter than I have been for years, at a charity meeting trying to help patients who haven’t had their procedures yet! Yes, it’s annoying but sometimes fir the best. Good luck and keep us posted!😁

A friend in the medical profession suggested I should always assume that things would be delayed/cancelled.

And guess what, everything went exactly to schedule!

So sorry but this happens. It was 5th time lucky for my husband!

You just get to think that the poor soul before you,or the emergency brought in that replaces you, is in a far worse place than you.

All the very best for 12th March. xxx

Jezzo yeah the man across the ward from me was bumped 4 times before finally getting his done last week. Nightmare but sometimes same as mine on Tuesday was totally unavoidable.

Hi, The same thing happened to me - I had my pre med and 2 hours later was told a heart and lung transplant had come in so I get how you feel - I was just glad that I wasn't the heart and lung patient.

Hope it goes well next month.

My op was 3 years ago and I am feeling great.

I know how you feel. I was supposed to have my op a year ago this week but it was cancelled because the beast from the east struck and the anaesthetist couldn't get in. I had it done three weeks later.

Markyboy1903 profile image
Markyboy1903

I remember having my T.O.E appointment around that time as well and luckily it wasn't cancelled and managed to get through. The doc, nurses and others in a lot of places worked so hard during the beast because as you experienced some folk couldn't make it in
