The unexpected prospect of heart surgery is always scary, but do remember it is absolutely routine for the surgeons. Septal myectomy has been done since the 1960s and is very safe and effective. I found my own heart surgery (valve replacement) exhausting but every week I felt better. I suggest talking over your fears with the BHF nurse helpline. One thing everyone is agreed is that the advance fears are much worse than the reality - as with so many things we dread. Try to accept it , remember it will make you feel better, and carry on with life in the meanwhile. It will soon be behind you.

All the best
