Post-surgery Prognosis

I am possibly needing an aortic valve replacement to be done. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this and been given a prognosis for life expectancy post-surgery?

Has anyone been told how long they can expect a valve to last?

Lots of us have had replacement valves. I was advised that the valve should be good for 20 to 30 years. It is a big operation.

However, the surgical teams are simply brilliant and do marvellous work . Survival rates are excellent.

Did you get any symptoms when the first valve needed replacing? If so, Did the replacements alleviate them? Sorry for the barrage of questions but quite anxious at the moment. I've had an MRI in October and my follow up is end of January via phone

Hello SeagullerI had an aortic valve replacement this year in March. I was recommended to have a mechanical valve due to my age (52) and I was happy to go with this as I didn't want to go through such a major op again if I could help it. I didn't really get symptoms beforehand so it was a huge shock to discover my valve had dilated to 58mm and needed an urgent op😨. 8 months on, my recovery has gone well and I'm back to doing things as previously and hope to get even a bit fitter than before. I am hopeful to have a similar life expectancy that I would have had prior to my diagnosis, but I now try to be a bit healthier which can only be a good thing. I also have an increased appreciation for my life now. I wish you the very best 🤗

Were any of the initial signs of deterioration lsvd or infarction?

i had a tissue AVR 10 weeks ago. On the consent form, as to the reason for the op, the surgeon had written ' to prolong life' among others. I guess that is as good as it gets. I was told my valve should last up to 20 years which will take me to 87.

Bisoprolol and aspirin are the only heart meds I take.

Hi. I had a tissue valve replacement when I had emergency open heart surgery for an aortic dissection, 4yrs ago last April. I was told the valve had a lifespan of 10-15 years, but it wouldn't be open heart surgery again to replace it, I think they go in via a vein in the groin.

I'm not looking forward to it to be honest, but that would be better than being cut open again.
