Rehab advice needed

Hi - Just signed up . I had 2 stents fitted last Monday 31st. All seems ok although the plan is to have a further stent in a few weeks . It was a shock as I am reasonably fit and although I have a rehab session booked in Feb , does anyone have advice on using weights to slowly get back in shape ? How long should I leave it?

I’m a week ahead of you - only managed a couple of gentle walks so far. Tweaked something hoovering as i started to feel stronger....so slowed myself down. I’ve decided there’s no point rushing for sake of a few weeks.

At rehab there is nurses and physio’s there taking care of you. They do not push you beyond ability. Go and enjoy

I should imagine weight training might need to be done a little further down the line. My doctor says that brisk walking for a minimum of half an hour a day is the best start, then as you get better you increase the length of time and start introducing additional types of exercise routines. I do Tai Chi and walk a lot more. Have a word with your doctor and ask if and when it might be suitable to introduce weights and how to ensure you do not strain yourself and do any damage. Good luck with it and good health for 2019

Hi had 4 stents fitted following severe heart attack. 4 weeks later started cardio Rehab. During the 8 week course you will gradually build up your strength. In Teesside we also had a GP referral scheme to a local gym where you are taken through various exercises. After completion you are entitled to reduced fee gym membership for a year. Take your time and you will gradually get back to full fitness.

Hi Tony - I advise waiting until you have completed rehab before thinking of using weights. You will have opportunities in rehab to ask questions about exercising and weights post rehab. I was told to be cautious about any form of lifting for at least 4 weeks post stents. Around the home avoid making beds as it's deceptive how much effort is required is lifting the side of mattress could put significant pressure on your chest area. Prior to rehab do lots of walking gradually increasing pace and keep as active as possible.

Hi Tony, please speak to the rehab nurse before using weights or the gym, They no best, And will help you with a recovery plan, I had 5 stents on my first visit, and 2 on my second.

My second visit appointment took 16 weeks to arrive, so don't bet on being back in for your second stent that quick. (Unless your with Bupa and or paying for it) Speak to your GP and ask if they can give you the waiting time for your area.

I would only echo what others have said, before you consider any type to exercise, its best to wait till you join the rehab sessions. For me the rehab sessions were best thing happened as I got my confidence back. I was at ease knowing that I was in the safe environment. If the sessions don’t appear challenging, do discuss that with the nurse to tweak the sessions to suit your need.

All the best with your recovery.

I’m also potentially having one more - in another artery. He said it was a smaller one. They haven’t decided whether to do it yet. My head is a bit of a mess wondering if it’s best to do or leave. I can’t imagine it won’t deteriorate. Sounds like you’re in a similar situation.

Hi David It does seem similar . I am going with the mind set that the consultant knows best but hoping the meds and a change of lifestyle has reversed the damage by the time I go again. Best of luck
