just an anonymous reply, I receivred a mailing from my Bank!!.It was the Nationwide; if you have an account you have automatically have travel cover up to 75 there after you have to notify N/wide of health difficulties. Not a bad add-on to customer satisfaction.

I would seek confirmation from Nationwide as my understanding is they offer travel cover but not for pre existing conditions. Even for under 75's they expect you to notify them of any health problems and will then charge a supplement which is often more than companies that offer specialist cover will charge. Sorry to out a negative slant on this but having proper travel cover is imperative as the slightest error can invalidate the policy

Totally agree! People can think they are clever but insurance companies are cleverer. Early this year there was a "crowd funding" appeal to raise money to pay the medical bills for a grandmother who did not have the right travel insurance when she had to be evacuated from a cruise ship for treatment. I do not think it was that successful as many were concerned it might start a trend. One worry I have is I have relatives living in Europe and travel insurance tops up the EHIC card - will we have it post Brexit?*!

Use to have this account with Nationwide but cover was withdrawn after heart attack and 4xCABG. Switched to the direct account (no monthly charge) and sourced travel insurance from a third party

My bank in Oz did similar. Things you need to look out for:Some require that you actually paid for the travel using their credit card.

Some will cover pre-existing condition for free (including heart disease) but others require an extra fee.

Some will not cover ANY of your pre-existing conditions if you have more than one (e.g. as soon as I also listed diverticulitis (pretty common for oldies) they wouldn't cover ANY of my conditions including my heart. Note that if you don't declare the diverticulitis so you still get covered for your heart they won't pay out on the heart if you have problems.

The level of cover varies - the actual amount paid for a hospital bed per day likely won't cover the actual cost, especially in the U.S.A.

They often don't cover medications, again in the USA this could be thousands.

The other big thing is that the insurance likely won't cover incidentals for family travelling with you - hotels, meals, transport etc.

Unless you have a lot of spare cash or credit to cover the shortfall you need to be very careful.

I have an account with NW but our main account is with Lloyd’s who we have had cover with for 32 yrs. They declined to cover me once I told them I had a pacemaker.

I am now insured through Staysure.
