Hi - some studies here in Oz have shown many patients stop taking their statins because they get muscle soreness, a fairly rare side effect. The muscle soreness is often just their bodies adjusting to exercise (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) and there is anecdotal evidence that medications get blamed for lots of things that are in fact due to surgery aftermath, diet changes etc. In Oz we have a real problem with people stopping meds and ending up having more surgery for reasons not associated with the meds. Interested to know if BHF has any info/research on these sorts of issues?

Correlation is not Causation - suggestion for BHF
I vaguely remember reading about a study which tried to tackle this idea that many people blame their bodily pains/aches etc on their medications. I think it is fair to say that many people who have "cardiac" problems may not have maintained any reasonable level of physical fitness over the years that their problems have developed and do feel pain in the form of DOMS after even relatively light periods of exercise. I have a friend who has very high cholesterol and has been a very long time heavy smoker who can no longer even walk to the postbox without extreme calf muscle pain. She is now being investigated for Peripheral Artery disease- I can certainly imagine people with high cholesterol readings being placed on a course of exercise plus a course of statin medication then blaming the pain that they get during exercise on the statins - after all, the claim that statins cause muscle pain is promulgated everywhere on the Internet. At 71YO, I did a very hard and fast ( for me ) 10 klm footrace yesterday - I have lots of pains this morning but I am certain that they have not been caused by my statin medication
