Hello, new to the site, can someone advise a travel insurance company: Had 3 stents recently and would like travel insurance for Europe only, up to 90 days. Please help. Thanks to the wonderful NHS staff and nurses at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford and East Kent Re-Hab Team.

If you are over 50 StaySure are competitive. However, all companies will quote very increased premiums or not at all if surgery was recent or there are ongoing investigations. The question is how recent is recently? There is a pinned post about insurance to the right.

Hello MichaelJH

Thank you very much for the reply, I had the stents fitted 3 weeks ago, but do not anticipate travelling until April 2019, hoping that would be enough time for a full recovery and sympathetic insurance quote.

Hi! I would leave approaching any insurance company till at least six weeks but preferably twelve post procedure. The further you are past your procedure the better the quotes would be.

The only downside with having to leave it until a later date is if you have already booked to go and something happens in the meantime. Sometimes you do have to take the risk and I know from experience how much help I got from the Spanish Health Service following a fall using my EHIC card - although it is no replacement for proper insurance do make sure you have a current one.

Good evening

Thanks for the help, I used the EHIC card in Portugal, they were excellent and advised me to come home and had the stent operation when I got back to the UK.

Happy travelling.

Just a quick note. Depending on this long dragged out Brexit deal the EHIC card may no longer be valid after March next year. I am certain this will cause increased premiums!

Another fabulous benefit from 'taking back control of our country' Heart felt thanks to all you Brexiteers!

Actually believe that reciprocal healthcare and maintenance of the EHIC card arrangement is a common sense, win,win arrangement. Falls down however if you ever have the misfortune to have to seek state medical care in a French ski resort.

And another thing. Competitive premiums are one measure of a holiday medical insurance policy but the actual test is do they meet your claims when illness strikes? So the criteria should be which companies pay out promptly on bona fide claims rather than how low the premium is. Just saying.

Try "Paying to much" I got 2 weeks insurance to Norway for £202. I have had a heart attack and have APF. Good luck from BreakThrough 56

Tricky one this. I had mitral valve repair 8 months ago and tried to get a quote to go to Barcelona for a few days in June. No problems at all post op and now back at work full time and fighting fit feeling better than I have done in years. Wow quote was twice as high as the price of the holiday. So didnt go, friend went in my place. If you are more than 6 months on from surgery, price sometimes drops, I know from having Cancer over 25 years ago they dont like to insure you at all and the policies are loaded with against you. However dont give up there are plenty of specialist companies out there who will cover you. Please do not try and go without insurance, I met someone in the USA several years ago who had gone to Florida with no insurance, she had, had a kidney removed 4 months previously, she thought I was mad paying £185 for mine. I know that I would not go abroad if I was not feeling well, but believe me, I work in an airport and plenty do !!!!

There was a news item at the earlier in the year about a woman who needed emergency treatment for breathing difficulties (had stents plus?) in Mexico. Her limited insurance only covered Europe and her family were attempting to pay the £50k bill by crowd funding!

I hope to get away for 4/5 days in the autumn but will stay within the UK this year!

Travel insurance for people with medical conditions is a blatant rip off.

I challenge ,not for the first time ,any Insurance to publish there so called

statistics to disprove this.

What about the vast number of people who travel with conditions but have

never been treated for them.

Those who declare conditions are generally very well and are being treated

with up to date modern medicine etc.

At the moment I can recommend EHI PLUS insurance, they will insure for all

the usual things ,including repatriation , except private treatment, but in Europe at the moment ,as long as you ensure

going to a state medical centre you will receive the same treatment as the natives.

Try Manor Insurance. C

If you are a woman (or have a female partner / wife at same address) you or she can join a Women's Institute group & then buy their group travel insurance policy with Open Travel. I paid £195 for annual multitrip worldwide policy. No medical questions asked. Good luck. Clare

I have worldwide travel insurance covering pre-existing conditions through the perks that come with my banking current account. I pay a top-up premium in addition to my normal monthly banking charges, but it's still only a fraction of the price of a conventional policy. It probably will be cheaper to have the rest of your family on one policy and have your own specialist policy rather than all being on the same one.

Hi bjd2

I’ve got cover with my bank, and was dreading the extra cost for Greece next month.

I had AVR 1 year ago but because I’d booked the holiday before I was diagnosed and had the op I haven’t got to pay any extra and will be covered . My friend had part of her lung removed and chemo last August, in the October she went to USA to visit her daughter got her travel insurance from Boots for only £95 . I didn’t even know that Boots did cover, maybe worth a

Hope you get lucky 🍀 ✈️💓Kaz
