Driving after surgery

My husband is now 3 weeks in after CABG x 3 he hasn't had his appointment for clinic review yet. My question is can his gp give him the go ahead to start driving again if he is waiting beyond the 4 to 6 recommended time? THANKS!

According to the DVLA you have to stop driving for a month and then only start again if your GP says it’s okay. I had an AVR and didn’t start driving for six weeks, and even then only for short journeys.

Hi Traceytracey

The DVLA recommend waiting 4 weeks and then being assessed by your doctor, but most surgeons will say 6 weeks to allow the breastbone to heal. You can ask your GP who may be happy to assess him, but depending on his surgery and recovery, the GP may prefer to wait for your husband to have his clinic appointment with his surgeon. Sorry we can't give you a specific answer but each case is different, definitely worth asking your GP though.

Best of luck,

Ashleigh
