Yes l did cough a lot but my surgeon was very pleased l did because it meant my lungs were working properly and getting rid of any mucus from being put to sleep for 11 hours and lingering infection. Be careful taking any medication for it as some will interfere with warfarin! l am staying with a friend so will email you on Tuesday. Take care, Sue x

Good morning so glad your AVR went well, I also recovered really quickly, and was up and walking within 48 hrs. Getting the mucus up of your lungs is not nice, they taught me how to cough which made it a lot easier and put me on a nebuliser twice a day this got most of it up and when I got home used vick in hot water twice a day , it took 5 days but I got that last annoying bit up. The posthorax vest is very strange at first , but it will become your best friend , I did wear mind like a good girl all the time, just loosen it when sitting, after 8weeks I took it off it felt strange for the a few days leaving my security blanket behind 😂 if you roll a hand towel and tape it use it length ways down your chest it gives you even more support when you cough and sneeze 🤧 if you’ve not sneezed yet be prepared it hurts, a lot like being shot 😝 so wishing you a speedy recovery and you should be going home soon to be spoilt .Kaz 16 wks postop ❤️❣️💕

Good to hear you're making such good progress. I'm now nearly three weeks on from my AVR, although I subsequently had to have a pacemaker fitted as well. Didn't have a thorax vest just a rolled up towel for coughing. Had a slight chest infection so they pumped me full of intravenous antibiotics and that was clear before I left hospital, thankfully, so not too much coughing, sneezing hurts like hell when they happen without warning and no time to grab a cushion!

Hope you get to go home tomorrow so you can start your recovery proper.

My next warfarin appointment is on Wednesday but the clinic supports home testing so I've bought myself a testing machine, I will just have to do the test, ring the clinic and they tell me what dose of warfarin I need to take, will make life much easier once I'm back at work. Not sure whether I can get the strips on prescription, will need to check when I eventually get to see my doctor!

I too am doing well on day 9. Home on day 5, it's amazing. I'm really scared of coughing or sneezing though I do have the towel to hug. I even felt as though the bones clicked this morning, but my info confirms this does happen.

It's hard to know how much to do. Take care everyone, I'm looking forward to the New Year.

Love Margaret x

Hi, yes he had his AVR end of September. Doing well, walking 5 miles a day. Now having rehab once a week to build up his upper body strength. Still gets a little dizzy now & again but all pretty normal they say. Wishing you a speedy recovery x

bloody cheesed off my warfrin is staying at 1 so i cant go home any1 else had this problem after avr thanks

Oh poor you. Feel your pain. I should have been able to go home on Friday but they forgot about the pacing wires and then the warfarin was too high to take them out! Finally ok today so should be going home tomorrow- if my local hospital (Worthing) gives me an appt at their warfarin clinic or they won’t let me go! I too have recovered well but felt very low probably due to being 3.5 hours from home so not had many visitors. Haven’t had anything but paracetamol since day 3 and no problems with coughing. Worse thing for me was having the drains out and waking up with the breathing tube in and fighting it! That will stay with me for a long time! Hope you get home soon matey

in reply tomewg

Oh bless you. My warfarin level stayed low for a bit then rocketed so you should be ok tomorrow I reckon. I was very swollen too. I put on 8kgs overnight! Not great for a little thing like me but it’s almost all disappeared. Do hope you get home soon. It’s certainly something I don’t want to repeat ever again so healthy living for me from now on!! - not that I was particularly unhealthy before though. 😊

So pleased you’re home! How was the first night? I’m doing ok. No pain as such, just aching, feel wobbly a lot but my BP is low and am anaemic so it will take a while to get my energy back. Make sure you take it easy! X
